If the patient's appetite is good, thereno reason why he should not be permitted the use of nourishingand substantial food. But if the long duration of the disease hascaused great debility, a great deal of caution has to be observedgradually increasing the patient's allowance, because the stomachvery often continues for a long time in a condition of atony. Thesame caution has to be used in allowing patients the enjoyment ofopen air; the sensitiveness of the lungs often becomes excessiveduring an attack of influenza, and it behooves us to ascertain anmoderate this condition of the lungs with proper care and discretThere is no reason of considering influenza contagious as many doand every measure tending to counteract this contagion, is anuseless torture. The only preventive measure which we advise witha good deal of success, consists in avoiding all those exposuresare generally apt to cause catarrhs of the respiratory organs. [Iepidemic influenza our physicians depend a great deal upon Tartaremetic which is regarded by many as a sort of specific for this edemic. We cannot do better than by transcribing Doctor John F.Gray's interesting note on this subject from my Symptomenpublished by W. Radde, New York, in 1848. '*In the first stageof influenza (generally of itself a fugitive state), I think it bmuch the most strictly indicated, and on that account as well asfrom my own observations in many hundreds of cases, by very farthe most efficacious means we can apply. The state against whichI give it, is: lassitude with great sensitiveness to cold, with cfeelings, headache, pasty tongue, inflammation of the throat (tonarches of the palate or pharynx), short turns of nausea, achingsthe bones, especially of the lower extremities, yellowness of theslight hoarseness, more or less fever-heat and sweats. The Antimony often acts as a perfect remedy in the stage of incubation, especially in those cases which would of themselves clothis stage by profuse watery diarrhoea with some vomiting andcramps.*» ^ ^* This stage, of which the angina faucium, the chiUs and the bonethe prominent sufferings, subsides of itself in twenty-four to foand the physician is very apt to be deceived as to the efficacy oTussis Convulsiva, Pertussis. 198The second or bronchial stage of the true influenza having beensuccessfully managed by Phosphorus or Bryonia, with the aid ofAconite or HyoscyamuSy I complete the cure by a return to the Antimony ; that is to say, when the air-passages are loaded with muthe cough being frequent and the exjiectorations copious. 11.]6.
