In such cases lodium and SUicea prove excellent remeThe catarrh remaining after the convulsive stage is not distinguished in anything from an ordinary catarrh, provided it is notcomplicated with emphysema. If this is the case, a cure can be20v Diseases of the Lungs.expected from scarcely anything except the persistent use of vegotable charcoal ; in the case of young people a cure is not only psible, but probable. The sequelae are too numerous to admit of an extensive notice inthis place. If whooping-cough is treated homoeopathically fromthe outset, they will scarcely ever happen, except perhaps tubercwhich, however, are never engendered by whooping-cough, but areat most converted into centres of suppuration. As regards thecharacteristic whooping-cough marasmus, we have never yet comeacross it in our own practice,K the homoeopathic treatment only commences at a later stageof the disease, the prognosis of course diflfers greatly from thenosis under full homoeopathic treatment; for at that stage we oftmeet with structural changes which it may be difficult or even impossible to remove.Another important point is the patient's mode of living. In thisrespect physicians differ in their opinions more perhaps than inother disease. As regards nourishment, it has to be of a naturenot to cause any irritation of the stomach or intestinal canal thmight exert a pernicious influence over the course of the cough. It is likewise an indispensable precaution that children should nbe stuffed with food, lest a paroxysm should so much more readilyoccasion vomiting; it is a good plan to keep the children quiet aeating, in order to keep ofl' an attack until the digestion is copleted. If food is vomited up too easily and too often, a smallquantity of Tokay will prove an excellent means of steadying thestomach. If opinions concerning the food and the beverages ofpatients cannot reasonably differ, they are so much more antagonistic as respects the balance of the management. We have alreadystated that Oppolzer, and with him a number of other physicians, prescribe a uniform temperature for the little patients, and evenkeep them in bed. By this means the catarrh is to be removed inthe shortest possible manner. In one respect the usefulness of thproceeding may not admit of any doubt, but in other respects thegeneral well-being of the patients is injuriously affected by it.the absence of other efficient remedial agents, the usefulness ofcofafinement is undoutedly undeniabla Under homoeopathic treatment, however, it becomes a useless deprivation. Of course thechildren should be kept in their rooms until the fever is passedbut if the. whooping-cough sets in with a simple coryza, the chilmay safely be allowed the use of the open air, of course with proTussis Convuisivia, Pertussis. 209http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
