While the discharge <strong>of</strong> bllasts, the matured ovulum enters the Fallopian tubes, which rendeits fecondation possible. A discharge <strong>of</strong> blood need not necessariaccompany the passage <strong>of</strong> the ovule into the tubes ; otherwise howcould a woman who is nursing her baby and does not see the leastsign <strong>of</strong> a menstrual show, conceive again at such a time ? Thatthis happens, is a fact established beyond the possibility <strong>of</strong> a dAccording to circumstances the menses appear at times sooner,and at other times later. <strong>The</strong>y are influenced by climate; thepearer to theequator,the sooner the menstrual period appears; theare likewise influenced by the mode <strong>of</strong> living : in cities the menappear sooner than among country-girls; by the mental capacities:the more advanced the mental development, the earlier the menstrual functions make their appearance. <strong>The</strong> constitution exertsno particular influence; very robust girls sometimes menstruatevery late, whereas feeble ones <strong>of</strong>ten menstruate prematurely. According to the^e circumstances the menses may set in between theages <strong>of</strong> 10 and 20 years ; in our climate they appear in cities between the ages <strong>of</strong> 14 and 16, and in the country between the ages<strong>of</strong> 16 and 20 years.rhe quantity <strong>of</strong> the menstrual blood is likewise variable and cannot be determined a priori ; stout women sometimes lose a smallquantity <strong>of</strong> blood, whereas feeble and spare-built women lose a grdeal. <strong>The</strong> quantity is from two to eight ounces.Nor is the duration <strong>of</strong> the menstrual flow the same in all cases.It generally averages five days, but, without being considered abnormal, may last only two, or may be extended to eight or ninedays. Sometimes the bleeding stops for a short time and then reappears again.<strong>The</strong> periodicity <strong>of</strong> the bleeding likewise varies. By far in themajority <strong>of</strong> cases it returns again every 28th day. In many casesthere is an interval <strong>of</strong> four weeks between the periods ; in a fewcases we notice an interval <strong>of</strong> 21 to 80 days. Four weeks may beconsidered the normal length <strong>of</strong> the interval between each twosuccessive turns.<strong>The</strong> influence <strong>of</strong> the menses upon the general health is sometimesconsiderable and at other times none at all. We notice hypersemia<strong>of</strong> the vagina and <strong>of</strong> the external pudendum, sometimes with increased secretion <strong>of</strong> mucus ; tumefaction <strong>of</strong> the breasts with painMenstrual Anomalies, 49knotty swelling <strong>of</strong> single galactiferous ducts.
