This medicine is a real specific for simple, uncomplicatechlorosis ; every simple case of this disease yields to the curataction of Iron, If physicians complain of the inefficiency of thimedicine, it is most probably their own fault ; for, if given atproper time and in the right quantity. Iron always acts beneficennor need any evil eflfects be apprehended from this agent if thestomach is weak and irritable. It is for such gastric symptomsthat Iron is more particularly suitable. The sooner the remedy isadministered the more speedily it will act ; the longer its exhibis delayed, the less reliable it becomes. It is impossible to detmine the proper dose a priori ; all we can say is that beyond thethird trituration the medicine has no eflfect and that it is veryoften necessary to resort to the crude substance. This has to befound out by careful trials. Of the numerous ferrugineous preparations one praises one, and another another preparation ; each maybe useful, because each may eflfect a cure. We are still withoutany criterium by which the usefulness of any particular preparaticould be determined; we prefer that which is least liable to chanAmong these preparations the simple Ferrum redactum of the Pharmacopoea is undoubtedly the most appropriate. It may be usedwith excellent success in the first or second trituration and isevents preferable to iron-filings. Among the salts of Iron we generally prefer the Acetate on account of its ready solubility ; onthe salt has to be frequently prepared fresh, because it is easildecomposed. The Sulphate and Muriate may be used, but they haveno special advantages. Chalybeate waters do not enjoy any specialsuperiority ; their administration requires some caution and careIn inveterate cases of a high degree of intensity, they are undouedly preferable ; their use renders it absolutely necessary that628 Constitutional Diseases without Definite Infection.patient should change her mode of living, which she might otherwise be indisposed to do. The use of Ferrum is contra-indicated bthe following symptoms: Previous employment of the drug inenormous doses ; even small doses cause a marked hypersemia aboutthe heart and lungs. The last-mentioned effect is apt to occur whtubercles are present in the lungs.Arsenicum is less frequently indicated, but, when indicated, it han eminently curative effect. It is suitable in all cases of chlothat have been mismanaged with Ferrum and which are generallycharacterized by a high degree of debility, with excessive irritaity, oedematous paleness, cardiac phenomena even during rest, andcomplete gastro-ataxia. Arsenicum is likewise important, if thepreviously mentioned symptoms are associated with a dispositionto adiposis, paroxysms of dyspnoea or else continued shortness ofbreath, profuse menstruation, liver-complaint, violent cardialgiasleeplessness at night, drowsiness in the day-time.
