Pneumonias of this character leave us indoubt whether they are inflammations modified by the ruling typhoid type, or whether they are genuine typhus. We are disposedto incline to the former opinion as long as no signs of abdominaltyphus are present. If pneumonia does not set in with the characteristics of genuinetyphus, but modified by the ruling epidemic. This condition ismostly met with in pneumonia setting in during epidemic influenzaand in general in all cases of epidemic pneumonia, but we have toobserve at the same time that, according to our most recent observations, Phosphorus is so much less appropriate, the more fully aprominently bronchitis co-exists as a complication of the pneumoninflammation. If, after red hepatization is completed, on the third or fourthday of the disease, the fever increases instead of abating, the ptration becomes very great, the tongue dry, the sensorium bluntedin short, if phenomena set in, which lead us to suspect the supervention of an abnormal course of the disease. If a purulent dissolution of the infiltration is evidently approaing ; in such a case Phosphorus is, in our opinion, indicated onlduring the first twenty -four or forty-»eight hours, and is no loindicated if the suppuration is under full headway. Altogether, under such circumstances. Phosphorus is much less reliable than ithe previously-mentioned conditions; but we have to observe that, whenever Phosphorus is employed in proper season, suppurationwill scarcely ever take place.K pneumonic infiltration supervenes during the presence of bronchitis, assuming the form of lobular pneumonia. In such a case, however. Phosphorus is not the principal remedy, at any rate, itshould not be given at the outset. If pneumonia is accompanied by marked and threatening hypersemia, together with signs of adynamia, or if, after one lobe hasbecome hepatized, the pneumonic process continues to spread fromone portion of the lungs to the next.If pulmonary oedema becomes apparent, as manifested by theabove described symptoms.
