We here call attention to this work for thebenefit of those who desire to become acquainted with the differemethods of treating syphilis, and which we have not space to dweluj)on more fully.Treatment. The only remedy for all the uncomplicated formsof syphilis is Mercury. Every homoeopath accepts this propositionthe practical value of which has been verified in a large numberof cases, as correct. Simple syphilis whose course we have indicaabove, requires for its complete cure nothing but Mercury ; butsyphilis as manifested in the various forms, a description of whihas been given in previous paragraphs, requires for its cure a nuber of other remedies in almost every case. With a view of simplifying the presentation of our subject, we will describe the trment of the above-mentioned single forms in successive order. The simple soft chancre heals in the time indicated, seldomwithin three weeks, under the exclusive use of Mercurius solubiliIf practitioners entertain different views concerning the dose, iprobably because no adequate allowance has been made for thecourse which syphilis takes ; moreover, there is no doubt that onindividual requires a larger, and another a smaller dose. In ourpractice we are in the habit of employing triturations, althoughmany physicians profess to have effected cures with the sixth andeven higher attenuations ; we never give more than one dose aday, of one grain each, second or third trituration. Under thistreatment the chancre never shows an immediate tendency to heal, but it increases in size, three, four or even eight new chancresout, all of which heal within ten weeks at the latest, leaving ascarcely perceptible cicatrix. Hence the appearance of new chancres should never deceive us ; on the contrary, it is a favorablesince secondary phenomena scarcely ever break out in such a case. For the last three years we have likewise applied the second tritration of Mercurius solubilis externally, dusting the ulcer withevery day by means of a little camel's-hair pencil. This proceediseems to hasten the cure; the ulcer becomes a little raised, aftewhich the cleansing takes place very rapidly. As soon as thischange is beginning to set in, we discontinue the local applicatiand now give a higher attenuation less frequently, continuing itfor two or three weeks after the cicatrization of the chancre. Thinflammation of the prepuce is less important than it might seeman operation need only to be resorted to, if the glans is too mucSyphilis, 557constricted by an existing paraphimosis. However, since the circumstance that the cut surfaces are apt to become chancrous, doesnot involve any danger, and phimosis may cause a good deal ofdistress, our advice is to slit the prepuce whenever it becomes iflamed and swollen. In order to protect the chancre from all unnecessary friction, and at the same time prevent an adhesion betwthe prepuce and glans — an event of very rare occurrencecover the chancre with a thin layer of lint. The indurated chancre likewise requires Mercurius sdubilis ; thispreparation is, however, insulEcient in very many cases ; under iuse the disease runs too protracted a course.
