If they are strong enough to draw the milthey may then be put to the breast ; by pursuing this course, thegenerally gain very rapidly.If anaemic children are born before their full term, they generalsleep a great deal, have a wrinkled skin which is covered with afine downy hair ; they look old, their little nails are s<strong>of</strong>t, theon their heads is short, their heads are disproportionately largetheir fontanels are far apart, etc.Such children have to be roused from their sleep quite <strong>of</strong>ten, inorder to feed them a little nurse's milk by means <strong>of</strong> a spoon ; thshould be done at least once every two or three hours, if their venergy is to be preserved and sufficiently strengthened. <strong>The</strong> nutrtion is likewise sustained by tepid milk-baths and injections <strong>of</strong>milk or soup; the injections should only be given in small quantities, about half an ounce, in order to secure their retention inintestinal canal and subsequent absorption.For purposes <strong>of</strong> nutrition, the milk <strong>of</strong> healthy and robust nursesis much better than that <strong>of</strong> mothers whose milk has become wateryin consequence <strong>of</strong> copious hemorrhages or exhausting diseases, orwhich has become greatly deprived <strong>of</strong> its protein constituents.Congenital ansemia occasioned by diseases <strong>of</strong> the parents or <strong>of</strong>Congenital Anaemia. 703the mother alone, is generally very obstinate, frequently continuduring the whole period <strong>of</strong> dentition and even beyond the period<strong>of</strong> pubescence. Such children generally cut their teeth at a lateperiod and with difficulty, are frequently attacked with derangements <strong>of</strong> the digestive functions and <strong>of</strong> the nervous system, amongthe nervous disorders are subject to frequent attacks <strong>of</strong> eclampsithey begin to run about, and they acquire the use <strong>of</strong> speech at alate period, generally have a pale and bloated appearance, haveweak and thin extremities, a bloated belly; enlargements <strong>of</strong> thespleen, liver and mesenteric glands are frequent occurrences whicare moreover <strong>of</strong>ten accompanied by leucaemia; they show greatliability to s<strong>of</strong>tening <strong>of</strong> the bones and to scr<strong>of</strong>ulosis, to nasal,chial and intestinal catarrhs, to croupous processes and basilarmeningitis. <strong>The</strong> most common results <strong>of</strong> congenital and protractedanaemia are tuberculosis, scr<strong>of</strong>ulosis, rhachitis and atrophy.Children afflicted with congenital anaemia should have healthywet-nurses during the first months, they should be taken out intothe open air as <strong>of</strong>ten as the weather permits, the use <strong>of</strong> sugarshould be strictly prohibited, nor should they be fed on thick gror pap, lest the digestive functions should become disordered; thhttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
