Full text of "The Science of Therapeutics: According to the Principles of Homeopath...Page 568 of 653Cuprum deserves our commendation in florid or galloping phthisisTuberculosis. 677its symptomB are bo Btriking that we limit ourselves to referringthe reader to the Materia Medica.Digitalis purpurea is, like Cuprum, particularly adapted to galloing phthisis with intense hectic fever from the commencement ; thpatient complains of palpitation of the heart, coughs up blood frquently, has no appetite ; the bowels are constipated and the pulis exceedingly quick. Digitalis is the most reliable remedy tomoderate the hectic fever, but the dose must not be too small. Noshould the dose be excessively large, because large doses are aptexcite the patient.Natrum muriatlcum is only useful in chronic cases, attended withsevere disturbances of the cardiac functions.IMillefolium is an important domestic remedy for tuberculosis. Our provings point to it as such, but clinical results are stillwanting.Sulphur, which is too often mentioned as a remedy for phthisis, inot, in our opinion, adapted to a single case of this disease ; whave used it frequently, but have never seen it do any good ; wheit is said to have produced a good effect, chronic pneumonia hasprobably been confounded with tuberculosis.Concerning the best method of applying all these drugs in practice, views differ considerably. The more striking these differenare, the more earnestly we recommend the golden mean not only inrespect to^the size, but likewise in respect to the repetition ofdose. The attenuations from the third to the sixth are generallysufficient; lower attenuations are scarcely ever necessary, higheones are unreliable. We do not like to give more than one dose aday of the appropriate remedy, sometimes only one dose every twoor three days. If a remedy has once been selected, it should notgiven up too soon ; if the improvement under it seems to stand sta lower attenuation had better be used before the medicine isentirely abandoned. If this should have been found necessary, andthe remedy that is chosen after the former, likewise proves ineffectual, it may be well to return once more to the last remedy thseemed to improve the case. A change of this kind sometimes hasa very good effect. We would likewise warn against a medicinebeing given for every little symptom and a strictly symptomatictreatment being indulged in. This is decidedly injurious and maydefeat all chances of a successful termination. This now leads us to mention a few remedies that are not contained in our Materia Medica Pura. As regards Cod-liver oil, even678 Constitutional Diseases without Definite Infection.the PhyBiological School admits that it acts well in phthisis.
