Madeira, on account of the seaair, and Meran, on account of its high situation, deserve mostcommendation. As a rule, climatic cure-places act the less favorably the more their climate difters from that to which the patienhas been accustomed. After his return home, he is so much moresusceptible to colds ; a Southern climate could only be preferredprovided the patient intends to make it his permanent residence.Unfortunately this is impossible for a large majority of tuberculpatients. Above all, patients already far gone in consumption, should not be sent away far from home. The remedies and general measures which we have proposed fora direct cure of tuberculosis and phthisis, even though it is soimpossible to employ them, or though they can only be employedon a limited scale, should never be omitted even in apparently holess cases. We can point to three patients who seemed to be onthe point of death, and who suddenly improved and lived for anumber of years in tolerable health. It remains for us to devote a few words to the symptomatictreatment of a few straggling symptoms. Leaving a direct cureout of the question, it is so much more important to speedily remsingle disturbances the less they are connected with the usual coof tuberculosis ; moreover, the duty of rendering the patient's efrom life as easy as possible, imposes upon us the other duty ofsometimes resorting to a purely symptomatic treatment. In thefollowing paragraphs we will give a few hints with reference tothis subject. The cough generally causes the greatest distress to the patients, leaving them no rest. At the beginning of phthisis, when thepatient is constantly teased with a dry cough and dyspnoea, Belladonna usually has a very excellent effect. In the later course of680 Constitutional Diseases without Definite Infection.the disease, after suppuration had really set in, we have obtainespeedy and real relief by means of small doses of Morphine, onetwentieth or one-fiftieth of a grain at a dose, nor have we everhesitated to avail ourselves of the narcotic proj)ertie8 of thisCannabis is exceedingly unreliable. For a cough with a copious, fetid expectoration, Carbo vegeL often proves a most excellentremedy.Hectic fever never requires special remedies; it is a necessaryattribute of florid phthisis.Haemoptysis has to be stopped as soon as possible, not only onaccount of the anxiety of the patient, but of the loss of blood.Aconitum, Arnica^ Digitalis, Ipecacuanha, Belladonna sometimesarrest it very speedily ; if they do not, and the loss of blood igreat and threatening, a small teaspoonful of table-salt may beadministered ; this will sometimes efiect an immediate stoppage othe hemorrhage. The laryngeal diflSculties are purely symptomatic ; they do notyield to any medicine.http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
