Inthe chronic form the swelling is larger and can even be felt extenally ; the pnins remain, but are inconsiderable and only inclineexacerbate during the menses, during pregnancy and confinement.The menses most generally become irregular, scanty ; leucorrhoeavery commonly present ; in the chronic more than in the acute forsymptoms of hysteria become manifest, more especially an irritablcapricious mood« The prospect of a complete cure is more favorable in the acute than in the chronic form ; in the latter the excause generally never ceases to be present and keep up the morbidprocess.46 Diseases of the Female Sexual Organs.Treatment The scarcity of this disease explains wTiy so fewcases are reported in our publications that can be reliably regaras cases of oophoritis. The aflTection being almost without an exception without any very great importance, we shall confine ourselves to very general indications regarding the use of the properemedies.Belladonna is in many respects the most important remedy in thisdisease. As a rule, this medicine is specially adapted to diseaseglandular organs, more particularly when located in the interiorthe body. Moreover our provings as well as practice have shownthat this medicine bears intimate relations to the female sexualgans. Oophoritis is pointed at by the symptoms, as may easily beseen by reference to the abdominal group. Hence, Belladonna isparticularly adapted to acute oophoritis attended with severe paiExperience has likewise satisfied us that Belladonna is useful inchronic form, provided we do not expect any immediate result.Colocynthis is recommended for inflammatory ovarian aflfections ;the symptoms, however, do not justify this choice ; nor do the paindicating colocynth emanate from the ovary.Conium maculatum. Jahr relates a cure of chronic oophoritisefiected with this drug ; the ovary was very much swollen and hadbeen indurated for a long time. This result and our physiologicalprovings may suffice to recommend this drug.If in addition to these remedies, we mention Bryonia^ Sabina andCantharis^ we have named all the remedies that are of use in acutand, to some extent, in chronic oophoritis. "We must not, howeverforget Apis inellijica which contains in its pathogenesis a numbeof symptoms pointing to affections of the ovaries. It is verylikely that too much has been expected of this remedy, but we areprepared to assert its eflScacy in acute oophoritis from abundantexperience in our own practice. [In acute oophoritis we should noforget to associate Aconite 8 with Apis ; the former remedy maybe exhibited first, and after the inflammatory symptoms are somewhat subdued, Apis may be resorted to, or both may be continuedmore or less at alternate intervals.
