Most commonly, however^^the^ irfflijnmation terminates in suppuration, the pus escaping outwardly acfileaving the skin round the opening undermined, a closupd of whiGlgenerally takes place very slowly. We have occasionally noticed a very peculiar form of lymphangioitis, more particularly in the case of women, and about the heWith this inflammation a violent fever breaks out very suddenly, accompanied by tearing pains in the scalp and nape of the neck. The abatement of these pains is attended with the simultaneousappearance of several nodes and hard cords about the head, which, however remain seldom longer than forty-eight hours. After ashort interval of ease another attack takes place, and this may bgoing on in this manner for several weeks. We have never beenable to trace such an occurrence to any definite cause. The treatment has to be in conformity with the exciting cause.Of syphilitic inflammations of the lymphatic glands we shall speaiu the further course of this work. If the inflammation is causedby the introduction of poisonous substances into a wound, the besremedies are Ammonium carbonicum^ Acidum nitricum and muriaticuin, and likewise Apis ; the last-mentioned agent more particuin cases running a rapid course. If an important constitutionalderangement supervenes during the local aftection, Arsenicum andRhus toz. are likewise indicated. In such cases remnants of inflamation usually remain, that have to be treated precisely like anyother case of chronic lymphangioitis, of which we shall treathereafter. If the inflammation of the lymphatic vessel is not caused by aspecific virus, the first requisite of the treatment, if suppuratinflammation is still present, is to direct our chief attention tcondition of the gland as the starting point of the whole diseasein order, by this means, to deprive the pathological process in tlymphatic system of its nutriment. If the inflamed vessel and itsgland are very painful, and no suppuration has yet taken place, afew doses of BellaOonna are frequently of much use; this treat444 Diseases of the Arteries, Veins, Lymphatics, etc.ment, especially in the case of children, will sometimes secure tretrogression of the inflammatory process. If the gland is verymuch swollen, Mercurius is the only remedy capable of still preveing suppuration. In many cases, where fluctuation is already distinctly perceptible, and a raised and very red spot shows the poiwhere the pus will escape, Mercurius still eflfects a cure. As awe hold that it is best to give Mercurius at the onset, more partularly in the case of individuals in whom every little wound is dposed to suppurate. If the suppuration progresses unceasingly inspite of all treatment, Hepar svlphuris undoubtedly hastens the spurative process, but is only suitable until the abscess begins tdischarge. Considering the circumstance that Mercurius so veryoften acts favorably even in cases where pus has already begun toform, we may sometimes be disposed to doubt the propriety of giving Hepar. We may be guided by the rule that, if the cellulartissue round the gland is very much inflamed, and suppuration cannot be prevented, Hepar should be given at as early a period aspossible; if the gland alone is inflamed, the use of Hepar shouldhttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
