An exhaustive development ofthese rules would occupy too much space in a work of this size. What we have said will suffice to show in how many ways a patientwith heart-disease claims our attention. In the third place, it is a matter of essential importance that amorbid conditions as well as isolated symptoms, which occasion anincreased action of the heart, should be remedied as speedily asHypertrophia Cordis. 879possible by appropriate remedies. Here, too, all we can do is tosimply mention the leading remedies that we may have to resort toin meeting complicating disorders of this kind, the most importanof which we will now proceed to point out.Palpitations of the heart, that is to say : a very violent increaof the action of the heart setting in without any fixed order, wiirregularity of the beats of the heart, and always of short duratare generally met with only in the case of very irritable, nervouindividuals. We have obtained the best success in such cases fromthe use of Digitalis or Digitalin, which we recommend as the bestremedies to begin the treatment with. The paroxysms being short,we cannot expect to do much for a single paroxysm, on whichaccount the remedy has to be continued for a time at rather longintervals. Ferrum may likewise be tried, of course very cautiouslespecially if the affection is complicated with tuberculosis andchlorosis. Pulsatilla and China may be classed in this category, but we cannot speak in their favor from personal experience. Inone case we have seen good effects from Argentum nitricum andPlatina, Sepia may prove useful to women, but will not do muchin the case of men.Palpitation of the heart is one of the most common and mostdistressing complaints in cardiac hypertrophy, but is at the sametime so intimately connected with this disorganization that it isimpossible to apply to it remedies that will have an infallibly cative effect. If the palpitation takes place at altogether irreguintervals, or if it only lasts a short while, or even if it contithe time, we advise the remedies that will be found indicated inthe following chapter, and which may be given with a view oftreating the whole disease, not merely a single symptom. If theparoxysms set in frequently, or at definite periods, or last sometime, we have remedies that have a decidedly soothing effect. Ifthe attack is excited by severe mental labor, by the abuse of cofor spirits, or by some unpleasant emotional excitement, Niix vomimay be resorted to; with this precaution that it as well as theremedies to be named hereafter, must not be given in strong dosesIf the palpitation attacks robust, full-blooded, excitable indiviwith bright complexion, disposition to changes of color in the faglistening eyes, injected conjunctiva, headache, stinging or shoopains in the prrecordial region, Aconitum is the most appropriateremedy. It is likewise suitable for palpitation caused by a suddeor intense emotion, and more especially if the individual is afflhttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
