Its first appearance is almost always onthe chin ; it is here that the disorder exists most commonly in ifiercest intensity, but it likewise invades every other bearded ption of the face, and in severe cases even the eyebrows.Treatment, Although sycosis, when it first breaks out, sometimes heals spontaneously, yet a spontaneous cure, after the disehas existed for some time, is a rare event, and the higher gradesof the disease obstinately resist every attempt to cure it. Howevwe have seen cases where a mentagra of many years' standing per*manently disappeared after an attack of typhus. In treating this affection, success depends upon commencing thetreatment as early as practicable. The first and most importantmeasure is to investigate and remove the cause of the disease. Wewould not advise the use of internal remedies until we are satisfafter having pursued this course for a short time, that it leadsno satisfactory result; otherwise we might easily be deceli?ed regarding the eifect of our remedies. We have cured three cases ofthis disease permanently and radically with Graphites 4th and 6thtrituration ; two of these cases had lasted for several years, antwo of these patients, moreover, never shaved. This statementshows that Graphites deserves our attention in sycosis. Acidumnitrieum is another remedy that is often very useful ; its symptobear the greatest resemblance to this disease. However, we oughtto state that we have never achieved a cure with this remedy alonalthough the cases improved considerably under its influence. Wemake the same remark of Aurum muriaticuyn. Siliceaj Oleander^Carbo animalis^ and a few other remedies, are indicated by thesymptoms, but we have no clinical evidence to adduce in theirfkvor. Hartmann mentions a few other remedies; but it is evident, from a perusal of his description of sycosis, that he classes undthis denomination all sorts of heterogeneous eruptions. We must not omit to mention a few external remedies that maybe of great use. In recent cases of mentagra it is undoubtedly ofuse to pull out the single hairs that perforate the tubercles. Thbeing a painful proceeding, it must be carried out gradually. However, it IB of very little, if any, use if the whole cutis is hyj31482 Diseases of the Skin.trophied and infiltrated. Among the caustics Acidum nitricumoccupies the first rank, probably because it is eminently homoeopathic to the disease. Aurum muriaticum is likewise a good caustiin some cases. Hebra advises to pull out the hairs before cauteriing; this proceeding undoubtedly increases the effectiveness, butlikewise the painfulness of the cauterizing process. Hebra's modeof treating this disease deserves being mentioned so much more ashe professes having cured every case by means of it. First thehairs are pulled out, and afterwards a paste of Sulphur, Glycerinand Alcohol is rubbed upon the diseased skin every morning andevening. A cure is very rapidly effected. Sulphur is the onlymedicinal ingredient in this case. "We shall revert to the externhttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
