But inasmuch as other parts otthe body may either accidentally or designedly come in contact withe chancre-virus, a chancre may likewise break out on the integuments of the penis, on the scrotum, at the anus, on the lips, mamand in the posterior parts of the vagina. Its course is generallyfollows : at the place of inoculation a small vesicle starts up,rounded by a red halo ; or, if the virus was inserted in an openwound on the skin, an ulcer may form immediately which, whenarising from the vesicle, develops in a very short time, so thatvesicle is very seldom seen. The ulcer is generally round, less fquently oval, never sharply angular, of the size of a lentil or pit has sharp, shaggy, not prominent borders and a lardaceous baseIt gradually spreads, but never grows to a large size ; it sometiacquires a fungoid growth from its base, without, however, becoming indurated on that account. At first only one ulcer of thischaracter generally breaks out, very seldom three, but in the couof the disease new ulcers break out in the immediate neighborhoodof the former, so that the glans is surrounded by them as by awreath ; they may likewise become confluent. It is a noticeablefact that the more recent ulcers generally heal faster, very seldmore tardily than the primary sore. These ulcers heal betweenthree and eight weeks. The healing process is manifested by thefact that the bottom of the ulcer loses its dirty color, becomesered with usually readily-bleeding granulations, and that the edglose their shaggy appearance. The cicatrix is generally radiate.If the soft chancre is seated in the urethra, it generally occupithe locality immediately behind the orifice, where it can be seenIf it is seated farther on in the urethra, its presence may be infrom a seated pain when the part is touched, and which is likewisexperienced during urination ; and also from a scanty discharge opus, whereas, if the chancre is complicated with gonorrhoea, thediagnosis is very generally impossible. The cure of this urethralchancre takes place in the same manner as that of a chancre seatein some external locality.The indurated, so-called Ilunterian chancre is chiefly located inthe transition-region from the prepuce to the glans, and on thefrenulum, but it may likewise break out on any other place, thesame as soft chancre. Many look upon the virus of the Hunterianchancre as different from that of the soft chancre. This questionnot, by any means, decided.
