Excein phthisis florida, the stools generally remain natural for a lotime ; diarrhcBa only sets in after the symptoms of extensive suppuration of intestinal tubercles have become manifest. These diarrhoeic stools are peculiar, partly papescent and partly watery, resembling mustard in color and appearance ; most commonly thepassages are accompanied by a quantity of gas, they frequentlycontain blood and pus, and are seldom colorless. They are not frequent, from three to six a day, generally two in the morning inquick succession, in the day-time they occur after the patient hapartaken of nourishment. Sometimes they are preceded by slightcolicky pains, at other times they are quite painless. They arealways a bad symptom, for the longer the diarrhoea postpones, thelonger is the patient's strength preserved. In the first period odisease, the patient is sometimes troubled with diarrhoeic stoolsbut they generally abate in proportion as the pulmonary symptomsdecrease in intensity ; if the tendency to diarrhoea has once becestablished, the course of the disease is generally very rapid. Tliver sometimes becomes very troublesome to phthisicky patientsin consequence of frequent paroxysms of hyperaemia. The skin does not show any special symptoms ; it is pale andsometimes exhibits a yellowish tint. The fatal termination is somtimes preceded by a painful decubitus. At an early period of thedisease the muscles begin to show symptoms of atrophy. A characteristic sign of phthisis is the bulbous thickening of the firsphalanges ; most likely this change takes place because the endsthe fingers do not participate in the general emaciation. What is peculiar is, that in most consumptives the sexual passionis very much excited, especially in the case of men, and that thevirile power continues so long unimpaired in spite of the generalemaciation. The menses remain natural for a long time ; if theycease, death may positively be expected within a few months. Theurinary secretions do not undergo any abnormal changes ; if colliquative sweats break out, the urine is of course diminished.668 Constitutional Diseases without Definite Infection.Infiltrated tubercles are seldom met with, except in the lungs. This form of tuberculosis develops itself from pneumonia, seldomfrom pleuritis with firm exudation. The inflammatory exudationis not reabsorbed, but transformed into tubercular matter whichshows an extraordinary tendency to suppurate; the course of thedisease is very seldom protracted. The transformation into tubercular matter generally takes place while tubercular deposits alreexist ; but it may likewise take place in ,the case of individualwho had never shown any signs of constitutional tuberculosis.A pneumonia setting in with S4ich peculiar symptoms, may runa perfectly normal course at first; or else, symptoms of adynamiamay show themselves at the outset, more particularly a very rapidpulse which does not show any change on the critical days, and anexceedingly exhausting diarrhoea. Not unfrequently the infiltratiis observed to take place at intervals. Most usually tubercularhttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
