This, however, must be expected, since thedisorder is depending upon anomalies of nutrition that come (mvery gradually and which can, no more than their consequences,be extirpated very suddenly. If no particular disturbances takeplace, the affection can sometimes be cured in a few weeks, whereif the usual mode of living which had acted as the exciting causeis persevered in, the trouble may continue for years. In such casthe disease has remissions and exacerbations, and is most commonlmore violent in the summer than in the winter-season. Uncomplicated chlorosis always terminates in recovery ; it is only whecircumstances favor the disease that disturbances of the nervoussystem and the sexual sphere, but less frequently of the heart, remain. Among the complications, the simultaneous presence oftuberculosis and scrofulosis is most threatening. We generally fithat scrofulous girls who are attacked with chlorosis, recover thhealth to some extent for a year or two, after which they die ofconsumption, or phthisis may set in as a direct development of aprotracted chlorosis.Treatment. This nas to be directed with a view of meetingthe cause as well as the symptoms of the case. To meet the symptoms, medicines have to be used ; but before prescribing our remewe ought to find out what the remedy is given for, what we intendto accomplish with it, and what we can legitimally expect from itoperation. Most generally, physicians aim at bringing back themenses ; if this is accomplished, they fancy that they have gainethe battle. This view, however, is not only totally erroneous, bumay result in a good deal of mischief. The menses are neither thecause of chlorosis nor do they indicate the grade of its importanThey are often absent, or, if present, they are generally irr^ulaChlorosis. 627pale, watery, but may likewise be profuse and occur too frequentlThis shows that they have no characteristic significance in thisease. Tliis is so true that after the menses cease, the cure of tdisease sometimes commences, as we see in the case of young girlswho are sent from the city into the country where they gain everyday in health and strength without seeing any catamenial dischargfor months. Of course, chlorosis cannot be said to be entirely cuunless menstruation has resumed its regular course, the more sothe older the patients are.The true remedies for chlorosis are : Ferrum^ Arsenicum^ Calcareacarbonica^ Fluwbum^ Sepia^ Pulsatilla; many other remedies may berequired for intermediate conditions.http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
