Itgenerally commences very slowly. <strong>The</strong> patients become more irritable, they are apt to get tired after every little eiFort ; theyliable to changes <strong>of</strong> color ; the skin soon loses its bright lustrthe patients complain <strong>of</strong> feeling chilly at an early period <strong>of</strong> thedisease. Inasmuch as the pathological picture which now developsitself, may be characterized by a variety <strong>of</strong> symptoms, we preferdescribing the derangements as they appear in each special organand system.<strong>The</strong> skin at times has the color <strong>of</strong> wax; at other times it is rathyellowish or <strong>of</strong> a dingy-white, the veins being either not at allbut indistinctly perceptible. <strong>The</strong> color <strong>of</strong> the cheeks may changequite <strong>of</strong>ten within a very brief period <strong>of</strong> time. <strong>The</strong> visible mucoumembranes are more or less without color. (Edematous symptomsonly occur in the highest grades <strong>of</strong> the disease, and excite a suscion that some other disease is at the bottom <strong>of</strong> these symptoms.<strong>The</strong> following symptoms occur in the digestive range : Impairedappetite, aversion to meat, longing for strange articles <strong>of</strong> diet,as vinegar, chalk, coiFee-beans ; bloating <strong>of</strong> the stomach after emeal, acidity <strong>of</strong> the stomach, generally the bowels are very torpiIn the nervous system we discover excessive irritability, neuralghysteric symptoms, fitful mood. — <strong>The</strong> breathing is accelerated;the least physical eftbrt causes an attack <strong>of</strong> dyspnoea, sometimesa very high degree. <strong>The</strong> circulation is accelerated, very seldomretarded ; disposition to transitory palpitations <strong>of</strong> the heart whare easily excited by a physical eftbrt; anjeraic murmur in the lveins <strong>of</strong> the neck. <strong>The</strong> menses are irregular, sometimes entirelysuppressed or very tardy, sometimes more pr<strong>of</strong>use than usual, butalways <strong>of</strong> a lighter color or even quite colorless.
