In resorting to external applications, we mnot overlook the fact that the skin of many individuals is exceedingly vulnerable, and that the application of oil or of waterpresses, etc., to such a skin may very speedily excite impetigo, increase it where it already exists.Medicines employed for this affection may deceive ns regardingtheir curative powers, for the reason that such an exanthem oftenheals spontaneously within a few weeks. A spontaneous cure ofthis kind can never be determined beforehand, for it but too oftehappens that an apparently acute or subacute course is changed toa very chronic one, or that the disorder is continually oscillatihetween remissions and exacerbations. On this account it is propethat suitable medicines should be given at once at the commencement. In the case of children, and when the face or the hairyscalp is invaded, Mercurius renders the best service as long as tefflorescence of the cuticle continues. Hepar sulph. calc. sometiarrests the disorder at the onset. If the affection has assumed achronic character, Antimonium crudum^ Lycopodium^ Arsenicum^Calcarea carbonica^ Acidum nitricum or Clematis have to be resortto. Lycopodium and Staphysagria are particularly adapted toimpetigo of the legs. According to our experience. Sulphur isutterly ineffectual in this affection; Hartmann, on the contrary, writes of this and other remedies as follows: "In impetigo /S'li/is undoubtedly one of the most distinguished remedies, provided iis not given in too scanty a dose ; even a bright efflorescence obase does not counter-indicate it. Among chronic cutanious affections Graphites seems to be characteristically adapted to impetigAcidum muriaticum is useful for impetigo on the legs in the caseof old people, with burning pain." He likewise mentions Conium^Oarbo vegetabiliSy Sepia^ and a number of other remedies that arescarcely ever in homoeopathic relation with the case. For impetigrodens Hartmann recommends Staphysagria^ Kali hydriodicum ;however, his delineation of impetigo does not seem to us to reprean exact image of the disease.18. Ecthyma, Rupia. Both ecthyma and rupia (or rhypia), according to their generalcharacteristic properties, are nothing else than forms of impetigthat is : pustules upon the skin, differing only in size. Both may have the same etiology as impetigo, and may likewisebreak out on individuals of apparently sound health ; in most cas600 Diseases of the Skin.however, both exanthema are signs of constitutional disease, andare more particularly met with among the poorer classes inhabitindamp and unwholesome dwellings, and not having a sufficient supplof nourishment. The ecthyma-pustule is very often a symptom ofneglected itch, rhypia a symptom of constitutional syphilis. The ecthyma-pustules are seated upon an injected and infiltratedbase which is at times of a bright, and at other times of a dingyredness, the latter, if some constitutional cachexia prevails.
