Full text <strong>of</strong> "<strong>The</strong> <strong>Science</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong>rapeutics: According to the Principles <strong>of</strong> Homeopath...Page 605 <strong>of</strong> 653If the patient is dyspeptic, the abdomen meteoristically distendethe region <strong>of</strong> the stomach bulges, the liver, spleen and the heartare pressed upwards ; if the stomach is acid, and nausea and vomiting are complained <strong>of</strong>, the first thing to be done is that a strdiet should be rigidly enforced. Such derangements generally arisfrom luxurious living or the abuse <strong>of</strong> spirits. Persons who are inthe habit <strong>of</strong> using spirits, may gradually be weaned from thisindulgence by diluting their drinks. A sudden and total deprivation <strong>of</strong>ten superinduces an injurious weakness. Internally we giveNiLZ vom. 8, or Natr. mxir. 6, or Carbo veg. 6, two or three doseday, until the abdomen becomes s<strong>of</strong>ter, the breathing easier, theappetite keener and the diaphragm has resumed its natural positioIf the abdomen is not meteoristically distended, the region <strong>of</strong>the stomach does not bulge, and the other symptoms continue thesame, the abdominal integuments are very thick, the bowels aretorpid and the hemorrhoidal veins somewhat swollen, it is simplythe mass <strong>of</strong> fat accumulated in the abdominal integuments, in themesentery and in the omentum, which contracts the abdominalcavity and, by pushing up the diaphragm, causes the abovetioned difficulties. <strong>The</strong>se can be remedied by strictly followingdietetic measures suggested in a previous paragraph. Internallywe persevere in the systematic use <strong>of</strong> Capsicum 2 or 3, and haveobtained handsome results by this means.720 Uraemia.Attention has likewise to be paid to the liver. This viscus islikewise liable to fatty degeneration giving rise to digestive derangements, dyspnoea, pressure in the epigastrium. <strong>The</strong> treatmentfor fatty liver has been indicated in the chapter on diseases <strong>of</strong>liver.Other conditions which sometimes accompany fatty degenerations<strong>of</strong> internal viscera, or adiposis generally, such as : hyperaemiathe liver, palpitation <strong>of</strong> the heart, fainting fits, sudden rush oto the head or chest and other symptoms <strong>of</strong> plethora ; anaemia,dyspepsia, intertrigo, etc., require the same treatment as is fouindicated in the respective chapters where these conditions arespoken <strong>of</strong>.Adiposis is sometimes benefitted by the use <strong>of</strong> mineral springs.Patients <strong>of</strong> this kind should never visit spas for purposes <strong>of</strong> heawithout the advice and consent <strong>of</strong> their family-physician. Chalybeate springs may be advisable in some cases ; in others Sulphursprings, in others effervescent waters, and in others again Iodinsprings. In all cases let the diet and general hygiene <strong>of</strong> the patbe regulated by his physician. H.]ift.
