If properly guarded, herpevery soon becomes covered with a scurf, the syphilitic ulcer neve<strong>The</strong> use <strong>of</strong> treating herpes prseputialis that is fully out, with aview <strong>of</strong> shortening its course, is very questionable ; we have thohowever, on some occasions, that this course is abbreviated, if tproper remedy is administered. <strong>The</strong> main point is to counteractthe tendency to relapses which is just as great in this form <strong>of</strong> has in that- <strong>of</strong> herpes facialis. Hepar sulphuris meets both theseindications, provided its use is continued for some time afterthe disappearance <strong>of</strong> the efflorescence. Hartmann, on the contraryrecommends the red precipitate and nitric acid. Caladium seguinumis likewise indicated, but more in the herpes pudendorum than inthe preputial herpes <strong>of</strong> males. If balanorrhoea is present, a freqand careful cleansing <strong>of</strong> the parts is <strong>of</strong> course indispensable.c. Herpes Zoster j Zona^ Shingles.This form is characterized by the development <strong>of</strong> clusters <strong>of</strong>vesicles, <strong>of</strong> which there are generally several, along the tract oor more spinal nerves, assuming on the trunk the shape <strong>of</strong> a zoneor belt, but on the extremities breaking out in a more irregularform.<strong>The</strong> etiology <strong>of</strong> this exanthem is involved in obscurity, but everyHerpes. 489physician <strong>of</strong> extensive practice must have noticed that at certainperiods <strong>of</strong> the year several cases break out simultaneously or sooone after the other, as though epidemic influences were prevailiuZoster commences almost without exception with rheumaticpains in the parts where it is to break out, and is <strong>of</strong>ten attendewith great lassitude and fever. <strong>The</strong> preliminary pains are notunfrequently like inflammatory pains. At the origin <strong>of</strong> one or mornerves, in company with a violent and painful burning, an efflorecence breaks out, after which papules arise, next, clusters <strong>of</strong> vewith tendency to run into one another. <strong>The</strong>se vesicles remain outfor four to six days, after which they change to flat scurfs. Butinasmuch as a new cluster may arise after the first, and these sucessive crops may continue even after the first vesicles are entihealed, the whole process may last even three weeks. It is veryseldom the case that scratching or the friction <strong>of</strong> the clothes wicause a superficial ulceration. <strong>The</strong>re maybe no pain during thecontinuance <strong>of</strong> the efflorescences, except the slight burning atteing the successive breaking out <strong>of</strong> new crops <strong>of</strong> vesicles ; but thgreatest distress to the patient is the burning itching which iscially severe in bed. After the falling <strong>of</strong>f <strong>of</strong> the crusts all paigone, or the peculiar itching may perhaps continue for some time,or finally — and this is not by any means a rare occurrencecostal neuralgia <strong>of</strong> a very obstinate type may set in, apparentlymore readily the less scantily the herpes was out on the skin.Treatment.
