Almost without an exception a more orless violent pain is at the same time felt in the knee, very genesurpassing the pain in the hip-joint in intensity. <strong>The</strong> aftectedlimb becomes elongated, its muscles become relaxed and flabby, thglutei muscles <strong>of</strong> the aflFected side become depressed, the gluteafold is much deeper, the trochanter is somewhat turned outwards.In the further course <strong>of</strong> the disease suppuration supervenes, thepus escaping on the outside and destroying life by caries and hecfever. A cure at this stage is a rare occurrence; or else no supption sets in and the head <strong>of</strong> the femur and the acetabulum adheretog'ether; or finally the head <strong>of</strong> the femur slips out <strong>of</strong> theacetabulum, in which case adhesions occur with a greater or lessdegree <strong>of</strong> immobility <strong>of</strong> the thigh, or with suppuration outwardly.It may take several years before the disease exhausts the diflferphases <strong>of</strong> this course. <strong>The</strong> prognosis is always doubtful, and, s<strong>of</strong>ar as a final cure is concerned, generally very unfavorable. <strong>The</strong>younger the individuals the more hope we may entertain <strong>of</strong> a finalInflammation <strong>of</strong> Joints. 429cnre; the older the patient the greater the danger <strong>of</strong> hectic fevesucceeding the suppuration.Although the number <strong>of</strong> homcBopathic remedies for coxarthrocaceis but small, yet the success with which they are used in thisdisease, is a source <strong>of</strong> pride to our practice. In view <strong>of</strong> the almpositive certainty <strong>of</strong> a correct diagnosis in most cases <strong>of</strong> hipdisease, the clinical results that have been obtained in the treament <strong>of</strong> this disorder, may be regarded as absolutely reliabletestimony. In the following paragraphs we give the treatment <strong>of</strong>the different varieties <strong>of</strong> coxarthrocace and their stages.At the outset <strong>of</strong> acute coxitis with violent fever and acceleratedpulse Belladonna or Rhus tox. may be required, but only as long ano pus has yet formed. For the distinctive symptoms <strong>of</strong> both drugsthe Materia Medica may be consulted. If the symptoms are notvery violent, Bryonia may deserve a preference. If symptoms <strong>of</strong>suppuration have plainly set in, no remedy can compete withMercurius which <strong>of</strong> itself is capable <strong>of</strong> moderating and even arresing the suppurative process. Only if the abscess threatens to brewe advise a resort to Hepar sulphuris. After the bursting <strong>of</strong> theabscess, the selection <strong>of</strong> a remedial agent will depend upon theconstitutional symptoms. If the patient gains in strength and thesymptoms point to a rapid healing <strong>of</strong> the sore, Caicareaearb. rendexcellent service in so far as it promotes the nutritive process.Acidum phospK is likewise appropriate under such circumstances.If the suppuration is pr<strong>of</strong>use, and a laudable pus is discharged,continued use <strong>of</strong> Sulphur will bring about a diminution <strong>of</strong> thesecretion or, if Sulphur should fail us, Silicea will achieve thiresult.
