Iritis is likewise a syphilitic phenomenon. TheSyphilis. 555whole aeries of phenomena that are designated as tertiary, is undoubtedly the result of Mercury, not syphilis.If syphilis is treated homoeopathically from the commencement,and every objective symptom has disappeared under this treatment?it is safe to assume that the disease is completely cured, providno new symptom breaks out in the space of five or six months.Under the old-fashioned mercurial treatment new symptoms maybreak out even after the lapse of years. It is not fair to inferthese mercurial symptoms are purely and simply the result of mercurial poisoning, for Mercury does not produce such effects whenemployed in other diseases ; the truth seems to be that it is frothe union of mercurial and syphilitic action that these phenomenaresult. The ease is precisely similar to that of intermittent fevcured with massive doses of Quinine; the cure is simply apparentand altogether temporary.Hence the total course of syphilis under homoeopathic treatmentis altogether different from what it is, when the treatment is coducted ih accordance with the principles of the Old School. If wehave availed ourselves of the course of syphilis under Old schooltreatment for the purpose of presenting a full picture of the disit is because homoeopaths are but too often applied to for treatmby syphilitic persons who had been poisoned ^yith Mercury. Underhomoeopathic treatment the course of syphilis is about as followsThe soft chancre heals between six or ten weeks, most generally bmultiplying considerably ; it is scarcely ever followed by secondphenomena. The indurated chancre heals between nine to fifteenweeks, during which period the infiltration disappears ; it is geerally succeeded by secondary symptoms, but they break out whilethe chancre is still existing, and heal completely between two tofour months. An acute bubo breaks only exceptionally, generallyit retrogrades without any subsequent secondary symptoms, and isfinally completely reabsorbed without leaving any particular infitration. We have observed this course in the case of buboes thathad already reached the size of a hen's egg, with intense rednessthe integuments and distinctly-perceptible fluctuation.
