Secale is likewise indicain the latter stage of hemorrhages that commence with signs ofcongestions, and likewise in hemorrhages occurring during the latter term of confinement.Crocus is an important member of this group of remedies, but differing from either of the above. K Crocus is so often recommendedfor active congestive uterine hemorrhages, we attribute this recomendation to the circumstance that the symptoms of the femalesexual organs have alone been considered. They are: Pressure anda feeling of weight, stitches, pressing towards and in the sexualparts, discharge of a dark, tenacious, even black blood, but withany labor-like pains. K, in addition to these symptoms, we considMetrorrhagia. 75the general languor and loss of strength, the constant chillinessa variety of other symptoms, it seems difficult to regard this seof phenomena as an active congestion. A passive congestion, onthe contrary, is undoubtedly a reliable indication for Crocus, whis more especially confirmed by the quality of the blood. In general, Crocus is adapted to metrorrhagias at the critical age or ware accompanied by affections of the heart or arise from impediments in the portal circulation, in which case varicose swellingsthe veins of the rectum and lower extremities present specific incations for its use. These symptoms likewise point to Crocus incases of miscarriage and post-partum hemorrhages, although in theformer we may seldom meet with the quality of the blood characteristic of Crocus. We take the liberty of presenting these three remedies as prototypes of the different medicines for metrorrhagia, even if by soing we should incur the reproach of a generalizing dogmatism. Thiwould, of course, be unjust, since it is the object of this worklead the reader through general principles to special or individuizing applications, and not to teach the former for the purpose osuperseding the latter. We rank in the Sabina-category the following drugs : Belladonna^Chamomillaj Plaiina^ Nuz vomica, Calcarea carbonica^ Hyoscyamus,Ignaiia arnara, Ferrum^ to which we add these short remarks : Belladonna and Chamoniilla are especially applicable in the hemorrhages of lying-in women, with a general excitement of the circulation. Calcarea, Ferrum, and perhaps Pulsatilla, are adapted tothe hemorrhages of feeble and aneemic subjects, with excited circulation. Hyoscyamus, if symptoms of convulsion accompany thehemorrhage from the start, more especially shortly after confinement. Ignatia and Platina for hemorrhages with excessive irritability of the nervous system and the general sensorium, especiallif the accident was preceded, and probably caused by some violentcommotion of feeling or by sexual excitement, Ignatia being moreappropriate in the former, and Platina in the latter case. The Secale-category does not comprehend many remedies ; at anyrate not one of them shows a complete resemblance to the prototypIpecacuanha^ China^ and under certain circumstances Ferrum^ Plumbum and Arsenicum are the few remedies belonging to this categoryIpecacuanha is generally appropriate only for post-partum hemorhttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
