If we aresatisfied that suppuration has set in, Mercurius will of course bour choice, more especially in the case of scrofulous individualsCalcarea carbonica and He-par sulphuris are likewise variously remended at this stage. If pus is formed and the abscess has burst, the same treatmenthas to be pursued as in a case of acute coxitis. The following remedies are recommended in isolated cases, andmay be investigated more particularly in the Materia Medica:Coniiim^ Lycopodium^ Pulsatilla^ Petroleum^ Digitalis purpurea^Aurum. The rest of the treatment may be condensed in the followingpoints which it would lead us too far to account for by a specialtrain of reasoning. The patients should not remain in a state ofabsolute rest, on the contrary, they had better move about by meaof crutches. If pus forms, warm poultices may be applied ; theynot only promote the formation of pus, but very often favor itsreabsorption. Only if carious destruction of the joint has takenplace, the patients will have to remain quiet lest spontaneous lution should result; in such circumstances a suitable extensionapparatus may be resorted to, which will have to be applied, however, with a great deal of caution. The diet should be at all timplain and strengthening; the use of fat is to be rigidly prohibitb. Gonarthrocace^ Tumor Alhus Genu^ Gonitis^ Inflammation of theKnee-joint*This is one of the most frequently occurring inflammations ofjoints; owing to the exposed situation of the knees, this mightindeed be expected. Its etiology is no less obscure than that ofinflammation of any other joint; it is certain that a mechanicalinjury is the least frequent cause of this inflammation. Yery oftgonarthrocace seems to be the expression of a constitutional affetion. As regards age, young people are indeed more disposed tothis disease, which is likewise, however, met with after the twenfifth year of age, and occurs, it appears, more frequently amongfemales than males.http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
