In our Materia Medica these effects of Iodine are pointedout very imperfectly, and tlie reader is very much disposed tocombine the symptoms pointing to asthma with the symptomsdenoting inflammation. In the "Deutschen EHinik** of 1856, threecases of Iodine-asthma are recorded, which are of considerableinterest: The asthma set in after a protracted use of Iodine, whereas an acute intoxication with Iodine never causes asthma;the paroxysm sets in towards evening or more commonly aboutmidnight and lasts about half an hour ; in one case it commencedwith intense syniptoms of laryngismus stridulus; the paroxysmwas succeeded by excessive lassitude and an irresistible desire tsleep. Nothwithstanding the violent difficulties of breathing, evsign of a material change in the respiratory organs is wanting;there is emaciation ^dthout any increase of the secretions ; greanervousness and restlessness during the intervals. Hence, Iodinecorresponds well with the purely nervous asthma, for which it hasbeen prescribed more recently by several Old School practitionersof course, in enormous doses. Except a few not very striking curehomoeopathic literature does not offer any cases of asthma succesfully treated with Iodine.Stannum may be tried if the attack supervenes during the existence of chronic catarrh, and the decrease of the attack is attendwith a copious secretion of mucus. We do not find any wherereports of striking cures with this agent.Under quite similar circumstances Zincum metallicum will be founda suitable remedy ; an additional indication for this drug is a cous accumulation of gas in the bowels during the paroxysm.Spongia has so far been found useful only in asthma dependingapon tuberculosis, but it has never effected a complete cessationbut only a marked diminution of the frequency and intensity ofthe attacks. The paroxysm is characterized by a marked contraction of the glottis, a wheezing respiration, with complete loss ovoice. In a few hours the patient hacks up a substance resemblingsoaked sago.Aurum certainly deserves more attention than it has yet received. It is particularly indicated in cases where it is not quite certawhether the heart is primarily or secondarily involved in theattack; the attack sets in with violent palpitation of the heart, great anxiety, and marked symptoms of pulmonary hyperaemia.Among the vegetable remedies there are but few that we wouldrecommend for the totality of the disease; most of them are solel820 Diseases of the Lungs.adapted to the complicated forms of asthma. We confine ourselvesto mentioning their names: Ipecacuanha^ Belladonna^ LycopjdiumyBovista^ Lactma virosa^ Bryonia^ Pulsatilla, Lobelia ivflata is madapted to emphysema than to asthma.
