We shall refer tothis complication when treating of pleuritis.Bronchitis as a complication is jjerhaj^ equally important aspleuritis, and requires a more careful selection of the remedy thpneumonia itself; for a normal coarse of this disease can only beexpected after the bronchitis has been moderated. In selecting aremedy, those have to be considered first that are suitable to boaffections at once, but more particularly to the catarrhal procesFrom the reasons stated, and from our remarks concerning Aconitein the chapter on bronchitis, we shall commonly find that thismedicine, which is such an excellent remedy for pneumonia, isgenerally inefl'ectual in pneumonia complicated with bronchitis.Hence we consider ^he very usual recommendation of Aconite as aremedy against the totality of the febrile motions as unfounded, and, in our opinion, its employment would imply a loss of time, without being of any advantage to the disease. At the commencement of the disease, the best medicine to be prescribed, is Belladonna^ less frequently Mercurius. It is impossible to indicate chteristic distinctions of both remedies, for the reason that bothtoo many points of resemblance. In a given case these distinctioncan be pointed out with more facility. A few valuable symptomsare: violent, remitting fever with sweat, for Belladonna ; remittfever with profuse, strong-smelling perspiration, mingled withcreeping chills, for Mercurius. The latter has a thicklytongue, the former a thickly-coated tongue, with free borders. AlPneumonia. 297curius has intestinal catarrh, Belladonna constipation. Belladonncan only be employed for a few days, especially in the case of adwhereas its use can be continued longer in the case of children. After Belladonna, Bryonia is generally suitable, which, in thiscomplication, is undoubtedly one of the most important remedies.Mercurius sometimes corresponds alone with the course of thispathological process, especially in the case of adults, until notremains to be done but to accelerate the reabsorption of the pneumonic infiltration. For such a purpose, remedies like Sulphur andSepar sulphuris will have to be chosen, one of which, we meanHepar, is eminently serviceable. Rhus toxicodendron is particularuseful, if the catarrh is dry, and malignant fever-symptoms manifest themselves. The indications for Tartar emetic have been giveabove; it is only in rare cases that this remedy will be found incated at an early stage, it is more commonly indicated in the subsequent course of the disease. This is likewise true with regardCarbo veget. Of other remedies that may come into play, we mention Nux vomica^ Hyoscyamus^ and Senega^ perhaps also Pulsatillaand VeratrwTL,Chronic bronchitis and emphysema as complications of pneuhttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
