True erysipelas, especially erysipelas of the face, verseldom terminates in gangrenous destruction; if this should be thcase, Arsenicum albums Carbo vegetabilis and Secale cornutum woulhave to be administered. An incipient suppuration cannot be cutshort by Mercurius; it is much better to at once give Hepar sulphuris and thus to promote the suppurative process. For theerysipelas of old people Lachesis is said to be superior to eitheBelladonna or Rhus iox. Here too we would advise to keep an eyeon Amwjonium carbonicum^ [also on Arsenicum. H.]For erysipelatous attacks without fever, we have never foundeither Belladonna or Rhu^ iox. suitable ; they are not homoeopathto this condition. On the other hand we cannot recommend Lycopodium with sufficient emphasis, and if the local process is strimarked, Hepar sulphuris^ were it for no other reason than becauseboth these remedies prevent the frequent return of the disease. Isuch cases Borax may be a reliable remedy which Bcenninghausenrecommends for erysipelas on the left side of the face; for it isErysipelas, 461in this non-febrile form of erysipelas that the inflammation isgenerally confined to one side. The sequelfle generally deserve particular attention, for the reathat they are mostly very obstinate and because it is in them thathe disposition to relapses is generally founded. Some redness ana doughy, not oedematous swelling generally are some of the mostcommon sequcbe of erysipelas ; the swelling is apt to be increaseby extreme cold or heat, in which case a stinging and tensive paiis experienced in it. As long as this swelling lasts, the use ofremedies must not be discontinued. The remedies which will eftectthe removal of this swelling, are Graphites^ Sulphur^ Aurumy andif the swelling is frequently painful, Lycopodiam and Hepar sulphuris. These remedies are the only ones capable of counteractingthe extensive oedema of the face which sometimes baffles all treament for years, or yields only very slowly. — Swellings of lymphaglands do not often remain ; if they do. Baryta is most efficientremoving them. After erysipelas of the hairy scalp, the hair is ato fall out; in the case of older individuals, this kind of baldncan scarcely ever be arrested, much less cured ; in younger persoon the contrary, the hair grows again without anything being donefor it. For chronic conjunctivitis after erysipelas, we advise prcipally Graphites^ and likewise Arsenicum. A subsequent deafnessor hardness of hearing is very difficult to cure, it generally reunchanged. Sulphur and Baryta may be tried for it.If the erysipelas is not seated in the face, some other remediesmay have to be resorted to, more particularly if the erysipelasbreaks out on the lower extremities. Nux vom. is recommended asa specific remedy in such cases ; we prefer, however, Staphysagriand Graphites^ and if there is a great deal of pain, Mercurius. [senicum may likewise be very efficient. H.] If erysipelas developitself as a consequence of debility, or attacks old people, so thgangrenous destruction of the skin has to be apprehended, Secalecomutum lasiy render efficient service.http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
