Niix vomica^ on the contrary, will be found approprin j)ersons of an opj)Osite temperament, an irascible, choleric dsition, a full habit, without any decided congestions, redness ofcheeks and tnrgescence of the body. If these remedies, to whichwe shall add a few more by and by, prove fruitless, we recommend as the best remedies: Causticum and Graphites^ more particularly if the appearance of the m.enses only seems delayed in consequence of the insufficient eflbrts of Nature, and the dischargefinally takes place in small quantity and then again ceases; Natrmuriatieum and Kali carbonicum^ if the menses do not appear at aland CaJcarea carhovica^ if there is no show, but the whole appearance of the menses indicates a plethoric habit of body. Sulphur iunder such circumstances one of fhe chief remedies, a few doses owhich ought to be given before any other medicine is resorted to,more especially if a chlorotic state of the blood is indicated bypatient's complexion."Among the remedies corresponding to the morbid phenomenawhich sometimes trouble young girls before the menses first appeawe recommend Sepia and Calcarea for the violent hemicrania whichsometimes attack such persons even at regular periods; Calcareaand Phosphorus for the violent pains in the back which sometimesresemble spinal irritation; for the convulsive symptoms we giveCocciilus and Ignatia; Cuprum is less frequently indicated; forsymptoms of anfemia we recommend Ferrum and sometimes Arseruicum will be found appropriate."b. Suppression or Delay of the Menses, Amenorrhoea." This suppression either takes place during the flow, or in consquence of causes acting previous to the actual appearance. In theformer case a cold may have operated; or cold washing may be thecause; or the feet may have got chilled; or the patient may nothave been sufficiently protected by her clothes; mental or moralemotions, vexations, chagrin, anger, fright, or dancing, sexual i56 Diseases of the Female Sexual Organs.course, dietetic transgressions may have led to the suppression. Most of these causes, if operating shortly before the time when tmenses were to come on, may cause their retention. A gradualsuppression of the catamenia may take place in consequence of deficient nutrition as well as of the abuse of warm beverages and tcontinued influence of depressing emotions. We have already shownthat a change in the mode of living may superinduce a suspensionof the menses in the case of young women, without leading to derangements of the general health." The more sudden the suppression of the menses, the more violentthe changes arising from such an occurrence. Some of the mostprominent symptoms are: violent hemicrania, great anxiety andoppression of breathing, nose-bleed, spitting of blood, congestioof the head, heart and lungs, and the like. In some cases a suppression of this kind gives rise to acute uterine catarrh, metritperitonitis. If a physician is called in time, he will of coursequire what gave rise to the trouble, and will seek to remove theconsequences of fright, mortification, anger, etc., by appropriatspecific remedies.
