In the nose the copious secretion is associated with soreness and ulceration, and a swelling othe whole nose, in which the upper lip generally participates inmanner thgt is exclusively peculiar to scr<strong>of</strong>ulosis. In the mouthwe notice frequent attacks <strong>of</strong> angina, with disposition to hypertrophy <strong>of</strong> the tonsils.It is only the highest grades <strong>of</strong> scr<strong>of</strong>ulosis that are accompaniedby peculiar affections <strong>of</strong> internal organs, such as fatty liver, ahydrocephalus, etc.<strong>The</strong>se various localizations manifest themselves in the most diversified combinations and successions, sometimes one at a time, andat other times all together. <strong>The</strong>ir course is always slow and dragging, subject to many oscillations between remissions and exacerbations, but generally terminates in recovery, as long as the vitorgans remain unaffected by the disease, always, however, leavingsome remnants <strong>of</strong> the disease behind. Even suppuration <strong>of</strong> thevertebrae sometimes terminates in recovery with surprising rapidi<strong>The</strong> general state <strong>of</strong> the organism is <strong>of</strong> importance both to thecourse <strong>of</strong> the disease as well as to the treatment. Pathologists hadopted two kinds <strong>of</strong> scr<strong>of</strong>ulous constitution, the erethic and torthey are indeed sharply separated from each other in practice. <strong>The</strong>rethic scr<strong>of</strong>ulous constitution is distinguished by a lively cirction and a marked tendency to febrile affections. Such childrenhave a fine, transparent skin, flushed cheeks with great tendencyto sudden changes <strong>of</strong> color in the face, an extreme nervous irritability, increased mental activity, melting, languishing eyes, dcate bones, and slightly-developed muscles. <strong>The</strong> torpid scr<strong>of</strong>ulousconstitution, on the contrary, Is characterized by a diminishedactivity <strong>of</strong> the circulation and reproduction, and great tendencyadiposis. <strong>The</strong> whole body <strong>of</strong> such a person looks bloated, especialthe face, the features are coarse, the nose and upper lip are swothe bones, especially the skull, are large, and the limbs coarselshaped; other characteristics are: a distended abdomen, flabbymuscles, mental and bodily indolence, a dingy-looking, yellowishgray skin, disposition to caniue voracity.
