To eradicate a tendency toa constant return of new boils Acidum phosphoricum- or nitricumand still more Arsenicum have seemed to us useful remedies. As amatter of course it is very difficult to decide this point.If we desire carbuncle to run a benign course, we have to treatit with medicines from the commencement. Acidum nitricumjSilicea^ Carbo vegelabilis^ Secale comutum are recommended for cabuncle, but it is difficult to determine special indications forof these remedies ; nor are we acquainted with definite and permanent results in any case. Arsenicum^ given at the onset, rendersexcellent service, and contributes greatly towards securing a favable result. Secede comutum^ which is too little thought of in sucases, may be given if cerebral phenomena set in at an early periof the disease ; Phosphorus may likewise be indicated und?er suchcircumstances. Silicea is suitable if the suppuration has fully sin. Here, too, as in the case of boils, we urgently advise againsthe artificial opening of the carbuncle, more especially if it ismature. An early access of atmospheric air favors the developmentof gangrene, pus is but too readily taken up by the cut vessels,the inflammation is enabled to spread. We are fully aware thatsurgeons are of a decidedly contrary opinion; but we can only askthem whether they have ever attempted the cure of a carbunclewithout a crucial incision.
