We do not mean to advocate the use of India-rubbershoes which afford poor protection, for the reason that they prevthe proper action of the skin. On the other hand, double leathersoles with woollen stockings aftbrd the most certain protection, without any incidental disadvantages ; this foot-gear is doubly nessary to those who are troubled with sweaty feet. It is upon sucapparently trivial circumstances that the success of our treatmensometimes depends. In the case of children our measures of precaution have to bemore complete than in the case of adults ; even if a physical exploration does not reveal any abnormal changes, yet, in their casthe conditions which give the first impulse to tubercular diseaseare much more easily developed. For fjersons of an advanced age, it becomes imperatively necessary to guard against exacerbations and to submit to measureswhich would spoil young people and make them morbidly sensitive;we must not forget that the human body, after reaching the ageof sixty, can no longer be prevailed upon to change its habits, dpositions or susceptibilities. Here it becomes necessary to provimuch as possible for an uniform temperature and for a supply ofclothing corresponding with the deficiency of animal heat; byattending to these things, many have succeeded in prolonging theilives for years. These general rules for different ages are not suitable for all idividuals, and we must not insist, from preconceived notions, upoadhering to a regimen that may be prejudicial to the patient. Many young people cannot undergo the process of hardening, many older persons, on the contrary, do not feel well unless theygo out in every kind of weather; one child is kept in the housefor weeks and yet the catarrh of this little patient does not abain the least, whereas it gets well very speedily if the child isallowed to be all day in the open air. These differences have tobe found out while the patient is under our treatment.Pure air which is the normal food of the respiratory organs, isof course an essential requisite for the cure of all pulmonary dieases. This circumstance is very much overlooked in the management of bronchial catarrh, for the reason that the influence of vated air is not so readily perceived and does not cause the patieany immediate discomfort. We know that the continued inhalation of dust will give rise to pulmonary catarrh; Mrill not theBronchitis Chronica. 223same cause operate in feeding the catarrh that already exists?Let the patient, therefore, avoid dust and smoke, and let oldpeople especially have their attention directed to the injuriouseifects of living in a room filled with tobacco-smoke, WoUencarpets in the rooms of such patients are objectionable, becausethe inhalation of the fine dust which detaches itself from thewool, may cause violent paroxysms of cough. Even lighting therooms with gas is prejudicial to many persons, and does everybody some harm. The patients are not always aware of the factthat it is to the gas that they are indebted for some of theirhttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
