On the hairy scalp the secreted sebum forms fine yellowishwhite scales or, as in the case <strong>of</strong> children, incrustations whichtimes acquire considerable thickness. In the face the sebum eitheremains liquid, in which case the affected part looks somewhatinjected and has a shining, greasy appearance, and the grease canbe removed by means <strong>of</strong> blotting paper; or else the sebum coagulates very rapidly, forming a yellowish, scurfy, s<strong>of</strong>t lining, benwhich the skin has a natural appearance, except a little redder tusual; numerous excretory ducts <strong>of</strong> the follicular glands are likewise seen.This disorder, oscillating between more or less, always runs avery chronic course. It is <strong>of</strong> no great importance, for the generahealth is not affected by it, except that the patients experiencethe affected part a disagreeable tension and prickling, or a violitching on the hairy scalp. <strong>The</strong> seborrhoea <strong>of</strong> pregnant femalesalmost always ceases after confinement. Seborrhoea is importantin so far as it is easily confounded with pityriasis and eczema,mistake that is apt to lead to erroneous and even injurious managment. <strong>The</strong> diagnosis is secured by the circumstance that in seborrhoea the epidermis remains intact.X^eatmenU Internal treatment is only necessary in caseswhere the affection is <strong>of</strong> a primary origin, or depends upon uteridisorders. In the last-mentioned case our chief and, indeed, soleobject should be to remove the cause, for the cure <strong>of</strong> the uteri nderangements involves the disappearance <strong>of</strong> the cutaneous affectioAs a primary affection the disease is very obstinate ; quite recein the case <strong>of</strong> a robust young farmer, we have employed in vain506 Diseases <strong>of</strong> the Skin.every iraaginable remedy, more particularly Aurum, Graphites^Lycopodiuniy Acidum nitricum, Calcarea carbonica. <strong>The</strong> only remedythat improved the case, was Arsenicum. Tried remedies for thisdisease are as yet very scarce. [We have cured a case <strong>of</strong> seborrhcwhere the patient, a young woman, looked as if she were envelopedin a coat <strong>of</strong> liquid and shining grease, with nothing but Aconiteand Samhucus; the treatment lasted about two weeks.
