Sycosis, Hentaii^ra.Barber^a Itch*Tills is exclusively a disease <strong>of</strong> the male sex, and occurs aboutthe age <strong>of</strong> twenty-four or twenty-five years, when the hair <strong>of</strong> thebeard, grows thick and hard. If persons who do not shave areattacked by it, which is a very rare occurrence, its causes are vobscure. In cases where the beard is shaved, the eruption may becaused by bad or irritating soap or by a dull razor, and, althouggenerally so frightfully obstinate, yet may, under such circumstances, heal spontaneously even without much loss <strong>of</strong> time ; allthat nead be done is to omit shaving the afiEected parts. Dirt ansnufiT likewise seem to occasion sycosis.<strong>The</strong> disease generally sets in, like herpes labialis, with a sensa<strong>of</strong> burning, heat and tension ; most commonly we first notice oathe chin a small cluster <strong>of</strong> isolated, red tubercles <strong>of</strong> a pretty lsize, ea^h <strong>of</strong> which is perforated by a hair. Some <strong>of</strong> these tubercin a few days change to pustules, break and form dark crusts, witout the infiltration which forms the little tubercle, disappearinthat account. In spite <strong>of</strong> all care, and generally in consequencecontinued irritation, the number <strong>of</strong> tubercles increases slowly buuninterruptedly, the former ones growing larger; the skin uponwhich they are seated, becomes more and more infiltrated ; afterbreaking, the pustules change to ulcers ; deep, ulcerated rhagadeand finally bullions infiltrations <strong>of</strong> a pale-red color are perceiSycosis, Mentagra. 481<strong>The</strong> patients do not complain <strong>of</strong> much pain, but their ugly appearance fills them with anxiety. <strong>The</strong> disease is extremely obstinateand may last for years.
