By removingthis increase, we cure whooping-cough, so that only a simple cataremains which would at most be distinguished by a somewhat moreviolent cough. That this is no hypothesis, but a fact, results frthe decided effect obtained by exciting the energy of larger children; from the favorable influence of powerful external stimuliapplied to various parts of the body as soon as the paroxysmthreatens to set in, for instance the application of a sponge dipin cold water to the pit of the stomach ; from the circumstance tindividuals who are not endowed with a marked degree of reflexaction, are not liable to attacks of whooping-cough, and finallythe abundant confirmations of experience. The remedy of which we make use for the purpose of moderatingreflex-action, is Cuprum metallicum. By continuing the use of Copfor two or three weeks in the sixth attenuation, a few drops morning and night, commencing as soon as the spasmodic character ofthe cough becomes apparent, we have succeeded so well in thetreatment of whooping-cough that we have scarcely ever beenobliged to resort to any other treatment. Many of our colleagues,on reading this statement, will of course accuse us of a crimeagainst Homoeopathy, of an attempt to perpetrate an extreme generalization. In spite of their censure we should have to continueour course, because it leads to success, and success cannot onlyobtained in mild, 'but likewise in malignant epidemics. ThatCuprum is homoeopathic to the disease, may be learned by a mereglance at the Materia Medica. Instead of metallic Copper, Hartmann recommends the Acetate^ which, however, has not yielded usas satisfactory results. After what we have said, we deem adetailed description of the whooping-cough to which Cuprum isadapted, unnecessary. Be the attacks violent or comparativelyslight, whether they occur at night or in the day-tin:e, or whateother dift'erences prevail. Cuprum will not fail us so long as nocomplications exist or the general condition of the organism doesnot greatly deviate from the normal state. Cuprum is really anantidote to the whooping-cough miasm. ' ^, ^ /^>,Belladonna has probably been better tested as a ^medy for"whooping-cough than any other medicine. Experience, Jiowever, has shown that Belladonna does not so much act favorably uponthe spasm as that it limits the catarrh and brings it more speedito a termination. Belladonna occupies the first rank when the disease first breaks out, and at this stage its good efiects are mosdecisive; but to continue its use in the convulsive stage, woulda mere loss of time. It again becomes an important remedy iffever sets in in the course of this stage, the patients become reand after that too quiet, the apyrexia is not free from cough, inshort if the catarrhal symptoms again increase and spread towardshttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
