Cuprum is not only indicated when the evacuations areBtill unrthecked, but likewise in the stage of asphyxia. This medcine is not endowed with much power to check the diarrhoea, butit is a valuable remedy in preventing the general paralysis of thorganism. For this reason, as long as vomiting and diarrhoea areBtill present, Cuprum had better be given in alternation withVeratrumy more particularly if the spasms are very general andrather of the clonic form. In the frigid stage Cuprum alone isindicated, if the following symptoms are present: Loss of consciousness ; spasmodic twitching of the fingers and toes ; trismuaudible gurgling of the beverage down the oesophagus ; no vomiting, in its place distressing, ineffectual efibrts to vomit ; therhoea has ceased, but on pressing on the bowels a loud gurglingis heard, giving rise to the suspicion that the stools are not expelled, because paralysis of the intestines has set in. Cuprum islikewise indicated if the pulse not only becomes feeble, but intemittent at an early period of the disease. It is of great importance what preparation is used. We doubt whether metallic Copper can ever act with great promptness; we prefer the Acetateand Sulphate of Copper.Arsenicum album displays its curative action in those terriblyrapid cases where cholera algida at once sets in without any premonitory symptoms. The most essential indications for Arsenicum are : Sudden and complete exhaustion, vanishing of the pulsetogether with violent palpitations of the heart, great dyspnoea, inexpressible anguish, constant tossing about, horrid thirst, yetthe least quantity of liquid is vomited up again immediately;burning distress in the region of the stomach and upper portionof the bowels ; complete suppression of urine. In such casessenicum should be given at once, without any other medicinebeing resorted to in the first place. After the exhibition of Arsenic the urine is often secreted in large quantity, a very favorable change.Beside these most important remedies we mention the following, accompanying some of them with brief indications or givingonly their names. It is not an easy thing to introduce new cholerremedies to the favorable notice of the Profession, for the reasothat the above-named remedies have proven themselves reliable inthis fearful epidemic to such a degree that they must necessarily620 Epidemic and Endemic Infectious Diseases.cast all other medicines that are recommended for cholera, into tshade. Who would want to experiment with untried remedies insuch a rapidly and terribly fatal plague ?Carbo vegetabilis has not unfrequently been found useful at aperiod in the course of the disease when no special medicine isdecidedly indicated. Carbo may be administered in the asphycticstage, if the diarrhoea and vomiting have ceased, if every spasmodic movement has disappeared, and the patient lies as if dead.http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
