We now regard him as fully recoveredand, if the weather permits, send him out into the open air, <strong>of</strong>course, with all suitable guarantees against taking cold. We havenever yet seen any bad consequences result from this treatment.We will now mention the treatment that ought to be pursuedfor some <strong>of</strong> the deviations from the normal course, and likewise f4the complications and sequelae, for it is these abnormal conditiothat require a most thorough knowledge <strong>of</strong> the appropriateremedies.If the eruption is unusually pale, we have to suspect the presenc<strong>of</strong> complications, and if they cannot be traged, we give Veratrumalbum or Ipecacuanha ; if the exanthem disappears all at once, wiout any apparent complication, Arsenicum^ Opium or Digitalis willhave to be given according to circumstances. If the meaaleare hemorrhagic, Phosphorus and Arsenicum are suitable, sometimesalso Mercurius. Angina, which is a rare occurrence in this diseasrequires Belladonna^ Mercurius^ or Apis, Delirium and sopor afterthe exanthem is out, may require Shus toxicodendron^ Zincum^ orOpium; Ipecacuanha may likewise have to be used. This lastnamed remedy likewise arrests the vomiting which sometimes precedes the appearance <strong>of</strong> the exanthem. A moderate diarrhoea docsnot require any treatment; if it becomes too copious and painful,Mercurius^ or Veratrum album^ or Phosphorus and Ipecacuanha mayhave to be given. Adults retain for som'e time a thicklytongue, and an impaired appetite, for which symptoms Antimoniumcrudum is an excellent remedy, and, if the tongue is clean, Ipecauanha. <strong>The</strong>se remedies should be given at once if the appetitedoes not return immediately after the spots have begun to pale <strong>of</strong>Complications require the same treatment that is pursued if theyoccur without measles, hence, we refer the reader to the chapterson pneumonia, bronchitis, pleuritis, etc. But we must not forgetthat these complications are very dangerous and may easily adoptan abnormal course; pneumonia, for instance, may assume a chronicform, pleuritis may be transformed into pleuritis serosa.Like the complications, so the sequelae do not require any speciatreatment on account <strong>of</strong> the measles ; for special conditions, however, certain remedies have become exceedingly valuable. A chronibronchial catarrh is one <strong>of</strong> the most common sequelae, and is generally very obstinate ; not to mention other remedies that are spcially indicated by particular symptoms, Sulphur is the regular522 Acute and Chron'c Contagious Diseases.curative remedy in such a case, which we deem, however, equalledby Causticum.
