Upon theabdomen, thorax and back roseola-spots break out in greater or lenumber, some of which are usually present already at the end ofthe first week.About the middle of the second week all these symptoms generally show an increase, less frequently a remission ; both the incand the remission are, however, of short duration. In the third week, especially at the commencement, the symptoms continue to increase in intensity. The patients are now lyinin a state of complete apathy ; in the day-time they are only slidelirious, but during the night the nervous exaltation is muchworse, attended with subsultus tendinum and grasping at flocks. The prostration is so great that the patients are no longer ablesit erect; they are constantly lying on their backs, and the bodyyielding to the law of gravitation, settles from the pillow downwards towards the middle of the bed. The tongue is only slowlyprotruded after loud and repeated requests; it is quite dry, withfuliginous coating which is likewise exhibited on the teeth and athe nostrils. Bedsores are now very apt to torment the patient. Emaciation proceeds very rapidly and his whole appearance is that of a generalcollapse. Up to the middle of the third week, the fever maintainsits intensity. In cases where the disease continues during the foweek, no remission of the fever is perceptible. In most cases, hoever, the seventeenth day is characterized by a sudden abatementof the fever and of most of the other derangements of the functioThis improvement at times is only apparent, inasmuch as in a fewhours already the symptoms again exacerbate ; but at other timesit is a real improvement marking the beginning of recovery.
