In cases of pulmonary, cardiac and cerebraldiseases, dancing is prejudicial under all circumstances."We permit riding on horseback if the patients feel strong enoughDeficiency or rather Paleness of the Blood. 699for this kind of exercise and, while riding, do not experience anpalpitation of the heart or dyspncea. Long rides, galloping, andsharp trot^ do not agree as a rule. The well known indolence of ansemic persons, their dispositionto sit or lie down, should not be encouraged by their physician ;protracted rest or a total deprivation of exercise diminishes thefunctional energy of the muscles and may even result in theiratrophy and paralysis.Sleep and waking likewise exert a powerful influence upon thelife of the blood.Anaemic pei-sons who sleep too much, generally become indolent, peevish, complain of dulness of the head, inability to think ; thyawn, look bloated, the blood becomes paler, the muscular fibremore relaxed, and the formation of fat and the serosity of the blbecome very marked. The want of regular sleep as well as complete sleeplessness makethe anesmia worse, and frequently result in nervous erethism, hypsesthesia, debility, digestive derangements, and emaciation.A natural sleep of six, seven or eight hours is refreshing, strenening, promotes the restoration of the muscular fibre, improves tprocess of sanguification, and invigorates the cerebral functionsVoluntary watching when the hours which should be devotedto sleep, are spent in a state of intentional wakefulness, is verjudicial to anaemic individuals. The will acting in opposition tothe natural want, an efibrt takes place both of a physical andpsychical nature and equal to the sleeplessness added to an excesof bodily and mental exertion, in consequence of which the anaemibecomes more deep-seated.On this account, anaemic persons should neither watch with thesick, nor for purposes of manual or other work; they should notread, study or travel at night. Even social entertainments shouldnot be indulged in after midnight, so that the remainder of thenight can be devoted to rest.Depressing emotions, such as grief, sorrow, mortified feelings, fear, homesickness, disappointed love, etc., and excessive passiosuch as envy, hatred, jealousy, ambition, wounded pride, etc., afanaemic patients equally badly as sleeplessness. Hence it is necesary in the case of anaemic persons that this morbid direction ofthoughts and feelings should be moderated or entirely subdued byan appeal to their reason as well as by the personal influence ofphysician.http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
