Whether an acute vaginal catarrh is virulent ornot, can be inferred from the symptoms with tolerable certainty. The non-virulent catarrh scarely ever affects the parts with muchintensity, but usually makes an inroad upon the constitutional webeing, and leaves the urethra unirritated ; at least no pus can bsqueezed out of its orifice. As in the male, so in the female gonorrhosa, Mercurius sduhilis ovivus is the first and most important remedy. The employment ofaconite in this disease, as recommended by Hartmann, simply involves a loss of time. Mercurius has all the symptoms of the inVaginitis, Catarrh of the Sexual Mucous Lining. 25flammatory stage: Itching, smarting and burning in the sexualorgans; increased sexual desire; inflammatory swelling of thevagina and external pudendum, with sensitiveness to contact;whitish, thick, purulent and greenish discharge, of an offensiveodor, causing erosions and ulcerations in the surrounding parts, with painful emission of urine ; tenesmus of the bladder and rectThese phenomena constitute a complete image of the gonorrhoea offemales, for which Mercurius will be found as efficient, a remedyas it is for gonorrhoea of the male. The symptoms which remain after the inflammation is removed, may require a variety of remedies. It is advisable to first findsuitable remedy among those that have been recommended forgonorrhoea of the male. Hepar svlphuris may be required, or elseNitH aeidum or Thuya. Nitri acidum is particularly suitable if thdischarge looks bad, is mixed with blood and has a bad odor;Thuya is more suitable if condylomata are present. For markedurinary difficulties Cannabis and Cantharides may be resorted to.If we are sure that an acute attack of vaginal catarrh is of thenon-virulent kind. Aconite, whatever Hartmann may say in favorof this drug, is scarcely ever required, at any rate much less frquently than Belladonna. As a rule Belladonna is preferable toAconite in all diseases of the mucous membrane ; in this instanceit is likewise more specifically indicated by the symptoms.Regarding -4r7U*ea, Hartmann has the following : "A conditioncharacterized by an increased sensation of warmth, fulness andtension in the internal pudendum, constant titillation, sometimeseven a burning sensation at urinating, slight fever, is sometimesmet with in the case of newly married people. It would be wrongto attribute these symptoms to infection ; they are caused by toogreat a narrowness of the vagina and by the contusion caused byintercourse, as is likewise made evident by the swelling and rednof the external labia, attended with an intense burning pain aturinating, and even retention of urine, owing to the inflammationand swelling of the urethra and of the internal organs. Arnicameets this condition. [Belladonna and even Aconite are often required to control the swelling and inflammation of the labia.
