But we do not evenregard most <strong>of</strong> the above-mentioned remedies as real fever andague remedies ; their choice depends upon the nature <strong>of</strong> the accompanying symptoms which, if a cure takes place, would have provedto be the cause, not the consequence <strong>of</strong> the fever. If we wish tobe certain <strong>of</strong> selecting the right remedy, we have to inquire withIntermittent Fever. 575great care whether the intermittent character <strong>of</strong> the attack onlyconstitutes an accidental, although very prominent symptom, orwhether the other symptoms emanate from the intermittent paroxysm as their fountain-head. In the latter case the remedies thahave been named first, deserve a preference over any other ; in tformer case the symptoms which are most prominent during theapyrexia, decide a choice <strong>of</strong> the remedy.In congestive chills as well as in the tebres comitatse the threaening accessory symptoms are the main indications. <strong>The</strong> mostsuitable remedies cannot be indicated a priori.A fever and ague cachexia is always such a complicated affection,that it is impossible to indicate therapeutic rules for its managapplicable to every case. <strong>The</strong> whole organism is involved, at timethe spleen being more severely affected, at other times the liverthe stomach and intestines, then again the lungs : sometimes thegreatest danger emanates from the ansemic condition <strong>of</strong> the patienso that it is <strong>of</strong>ten very difficult to hit uj)on the right remedy.China had not been abused, it will meet most <strong>of</strong> the symptoms,and will prove the best remedy in the case. If Quinine had beentaken to excess, Arsen. will help in the large majority <strong>of</strong> casesremedy should not be given up all at once, if the improvement isnot very speedy ; in such a case it is much better to change thedose than the remedy. Ferrum is adapted to all cases where theansemia and debility are highly developed, but no oedema has yetset in ; the patients complain somewhat <strong>of</strong> congestion <strong>of</strong> the chesand heart, nor is the stomach disposed to retain any nourishment.Natrum muriaticum and Lycopodium are indicated if the digestiveorgans are chiefly affected, and the derangement is characterizedsymptoms peculiar to these two drugs. Other remedies may berequired for extraordinary symptoms.
