Within the spots hsemorrhagic appearances are manifested, and between the spots ecchymoses are noticed. The spots fade awaysoon after their appearance, or else they fade very suddenly at tregular period or before. In the case of children the pulse exceeds 140 beats, and in thecase of adults 120 beats; moreover it is a small pulse. The tonguis dry. Angina tonsillaris. Diphtheritic membranes form in thebuccal cavity. The respiration becomes hurried and superficial.Sopor and delirium after the second day of the eruption.Of great importance are certain complications of measles, thatare very apt to occur and which were formerly regarded as metastases, because the exanthem disappears with the appearance of thecomplications. Laryngitis with crou{)Ous exudation is of rareoccurrence while the exanthem is still out ; it is more commonlymet with after the exanthem has left the skin. A slight bronchitiis an accompaniment of every case of measles ; it only assumes adangerous character if it continues beyond the stage of decline, reappears again during the stage of desquamation, or otherwise ^assumes a very acute form. It is very apt to run into an exceedingly obstinate chronic catarrh. Pneumonia is not unfrequent ; itis mostly lobular, much less frequently lobar, and may break outevery stage of the disease. It is most threatening, if setting inafter the eruption has run its course. It does not usually terminin complete resorption and, on this account, is very apt to lay t518 Acute and Chronic Contagious Diseases.foundation for subsequent pulmonary phthisis. Pleuritis is a rarecomplication, so is pericarditis. Enteritis is a rather frequentcomplication in some epidemics ; it excites legitimate apprehensifor the reason that other consecutive diseases, more particularlyscrofulosis, are apt to follow in its train. Affections of the brare rare; their intensity is rarely such as to excite apprehensiothe supervention of sopor is a bad sign, because it may usher infatal general paralysis.Of the highest importance are likewise the numerous and alwaysobstinate sequelae of the measles, which make this exanthem oneof the most malignant, whereas its ordinary normal course andcharacter entitle it to be regarded as one of the most harmless.Among these sequelee we distinguish :Cutaneous affections, especially impetigo and eczema, more orless extensive, but always very obstinate.Chronic conjunctivitis, with impaired vision; chronic otitis, witdeafness; chronic ozaena; chronic inflammation of the lymphaticglands, mostly without suppuration; chronic inflammation of theparotid and submaxillary glands.http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
