It is only within this space that percussion retui'nacomplete dullness.(345)846 Diseases <strong>of</strong> the Heart.<strong>The</strong> various sections <strong>of</strong> the heart which it is important to knowwhen exploring this organ, are situated as follows : <strong>The</strong> right auis situated farthest to the right, almost entirely to the right fthe mesian line, from the sternal margin <strong>of</strong> the second right intecostal space to the insertion <strong>of</strong> the fifth right rib. <strong>The</strong> right vfrom the right auricle towards the left, occupies almost the whol<strong>of</strong> the anteriorly visible side <strong>of</strong> the heart. <strong>The</strong> left auricle isto the left <strong>of</strong> the mesian line behind the origin <strong>of</strong> the large vesso that it is almost entirely covered by the latter. <strong>The</strong> left venis situated posteriorly behind the right ; only a narrow portionits wall, when seen in front, constitutes the left boundary <strong>of</strong> thspace occupied by the heart.<strong>The</strong> orifices and valves <strong>of</strong> the heart are situated as follows: theleft auriculo-ventricular opening with the mitral valve close tosternal margin <strong>of</strong> the second left intercostal space, and partiallclose above, partially below the cartilage <strong>of</strong> third left rib. <strong>The</strong>arterial orifice with the semilunar valves <strong>of</strong> the aorta immediatenext to and to the right <strong>of</strong> the left auriculo-ventricular openingbelow the sternal articulation <strong>of</strong> the third rib on the left sidethe sternum. <strong>The</strong> right auriculo-ventricular opening with thetricuspid valve on a line drawn from the sternal margin <strong>of</strong> thethird intercostal space <strong>of</strong> the left side to the sternal articulatthe fifth costal cartilage on the right side. <strong>The</strong> right arterialorifice with the semilunar valves <strong>of</strong> the pulmonary artery close tthe sternal margin <strong>of</strong> the second intercostal space on the left siFrom its origin the aorta coui*ses to the right and from beforehttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
