The anterior surfacof the heart is mostly covered by the right and left lung, so thapnly a portion of the anterior surface of the right ventricle iscontact with the thoracic wall, within a space which is bounded othe right by a line from the sternal extremity of the sixth rightrib to the sternal extremity of the left fourth rib ; superiorlyon the left by a line curving in an upward direction and drawnfrom the sternal extremity of the left fourth rib to the left nipinferiorly by a line from the nipple to the insertion of the righsixth rib. It is only within this space that percussion retui'nacomplete dullness.(345)846 Diseases of the Heart.The various sections of the heart which it is important to knowwhen exploring this organ, are situated as follows : The right auis situated farthest to the right, almost entirely to the right fthe mesian line, from the sternal margin of the second right intecostal space to the insertion of the fifth right rib. The right vfrom the right auricle towards the left, occupies almost the wholof the anteriorly visible side of the heart. The left auricle isto the left of the mesian line behind the origin of the large vesso that it is almost entirely covered by the latter. The left venis situated posteriorly behind the right ; only a narrow portionits wall, when seen in front, constitutes the left boundary of thspace occupied by the heart.The orifices and valves of the heart are situated as follows: theleft auriculo-ventricular opening with the mitral valve close tosternal margin of the second left intercostal space, and partiallclose above, partially below the cartilage of third left rib. Thearterial orifice with the semilunar valves of the aorta immediatenext to and to the right of the left auriculo-ventricular openingbelow the sternal articulation of the third rib on the left sidethe sternum. The right auriculo-ventricular opening with thetricuspid valve on a line drawn from the sternal margin of thethird intercostal space of the left side to the sternal articulatthe fifth costal cartilage on the right side.
