Erythema caused by external irritants, most generallybreaks out on the scrotum, at the anus, between the thighs, in thaxillse, face, and in the deep integumentous folds of fleshy persor at the place where the irritating cause exerts its influence.the cause ceases to act, the erythema generally disappears of itsin a few days. If the irritation continues, the epidermis maybecome detached (intertrigo), and ulcers may form, or the skin maeven become gangrenous, as in decubitus. Erythema arising frominternal causes, is almost exclusively located on the dorsal surfof the hands and feet, where it is never absent, even if other paare likewise affected. At first the place exhibits a redness, andin a few days darker-colored papules of various sizes spring up,which remain even for some time after the diffuse redness has disappeared; the affected spot likewise retains a yellowish tint forsome time after. In particular circumstances subsequent crops ofthis eruption break out on its borders, by which means the affection runs a very protracted course. This form of erythema is generally attended with a little fever, and at the diseased spot adarting-burning pain is generally experienced. The former varietyon the contrary, has no fever as long as the erythema is of thesimple kind, whereas the intertrigo of sensitive children may beattended with fever. The second variety, without any subsequentcrops, lasts from one to two weeks. In treating the first variety, all that it may be necessary for uto do, is to remove the exciting cause. In some individuals thedisposition to erythema is so great, and it leads so easily to moserious consequences that we are led to suspect behind the localErysipelas. 455irritation the existence of some constitutional disposition. Thisticularly the case with the intertrigo or soreness of children. Sthis soreness is often caused by improper diet, the first thing tdone is to regulate it with care; if the soreness continues in spof this change, a few doses of Mercurius vivus or sdubilis will cthe trouble very speedily. K this remedy should fail us, Lycopodium will efiect a cure. Among local applications, finely pulveristarch is the best and most harmless ; frictions with grease mustavoided, they are very apt to give rise to the formation of pustuFor erythema from internal causes, Mercurius is likewise aspecific remedy, if the redness is intense, the red spot raised asensitive, and the erythema is accompanied by fever. Hhv^ tox.has always proved ineffectual in such cases. If the erythema isconfined to the leg, Mezereum is the more appropriate, the more taffected spot itches and burns. Ledum likewise deserves our attention; so does Staphysagria; this remedy is especially indicated ithe erythema is seated on the upper extremities. We advise Lycopodium, if the eruption runs a protracted course in consequence osuccessive crops breaking out for a time.http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
