OneOleum jecoris aselli^ cod-liver oil. We shall revert to this medithe next chapter; a few words on the subject will suffice in thisCod-liver oil is decidedly useful if the digestion is impaired, istomach seems disinclined to retain food, and if frequent diarrhodischarges set in ; if, moreover, nutrition is impaired, the bodyemaciated and destitute of animal juices. *If the appetite is goothe digestion regular, and there is a marked disposition to adipocod-liver oil is decidedly hurtful ; in such a case it is apt todigestion and impair the appetite. However, in view of the highreputation which cod-liver oil enjoys, neither physician nor paticares about the harm it may possibly do, imagining as they do thagood results must be got out of the oil by sheer force. A proceeding of this kind is, of course, prejudicial. The second remedy ar42658 Constitutional Diseases without Definite Infectiou.Bait water-baths, with or without an addition of malt. That theyhave a good eftect, is evidenced by the numerous baths prepared othe mgther-lye of salt-works. When used at home the favorableeffect of the baths may be charged to the benefit which the skinderives from the operation. In the case of children attention toskin is too often and disgracefully neglected.I. Tubercnloeto.Tuberculosis is not only the most frequent of all constitutionaldiseases, but likewise the most common of all diseases. Accordingto Wunderlich it is characterized by deposits into all sorts of tsues and organs, of a pale, yellowish or gray color, of a soft chand sometimes a harder or softer consistence, of the size of smaGgranulations to the size of larger bodies, in which the organic ements (molecular granules and a few imperfect nucleated bodies)persevere in a low state, without any organic connection with eacother or with the adjoining tissue; do not show themselves capablof any further development, and either dry up, or else, becomedecomposed and melt. The formation of these deposits or tubercles depends in mostcases upon peculiar conditions of the organism with which we arealmost unacquainted ; it is very questionable whether tubercles cever be formed without some constitutional anomaly, hence, whethethey constitute a purely local affection from which the constitational disease emanates at a later period. This seems to ob justas improbable as the formation of carcinoma without a previousconstitutional anomaly. We will designate the radical disease intuberculosis as the tubercular diathesis. In almost every case tuculosis can be demonstrated as developing itself under the followcircumstances : It may result from a deficient supply or the badquality of the food in the same manner as has been indicated forscrofulosis ; in this manner tuberculosis often succeeds the lattthat when, at the age of pubescence, scrofulosis disp^ppears, tubcles take the place of the former.
