Of greater importance than all these details is theclothing of pregnant females. As a matter of course every tightfitting garment should be avoided ; if it does not directly interwith the portal circulation, it certainly interferes with the oxytion of the blood in the lungs. This point, generally speaking, inot sufficiently heeded. Moreover, the strictest abstemiousness iindispensable from the moment that conception has become anestablished fact. The use of coffee should likewise be forbiddenthe strictest manner. It is much more difficult to prevent thevomiting which, on account of the extraordinary strain on the abdominal muscles which the vomiting occasions may easily give riseto obstructions of the circulatioa. As yet we have no remedy thatcan be regarded as specific against the vomiting of pregnant fema80 Diseases of the Female Sexual Organs.and it 18 difficult enough in any given case to select a remedy, the reason that all cases look so very much alike. All we can dois to experiment, and to give Belladonna^ lodium^ Veratrum, CupruPulsatilla and Sepia^ the choice of any special remedy, being ofcourse determined by the constitution, the accessory symptoms, etBy employing these prophylactic means we often succeed in carryinthe patient through the full term of pregnancy. Of course wecannot promise success in every case. The treatment of 9^ miscarriage begins with the commencementof the hemorrhage and the uterine contractions. Wedoubt whether any other medicine will act more promptly andsatisfactorily at this period. Belladonna ranks next to Sabina. Iis indicated, if the hemorrhage commences with violent colickypains and a sensation in the pelvis as if pressure were made fromabove downwards, and'as if the sexual organs would be pressed outat the same time there is a good deal of vascular excitement.Opium is recommended, if a miscarriage is threatened in consequenof fright. If the hemorrhage is preceded for some time by distinct laborpains, Pulsatilla, Belladonna, Secale cornutum may be tried in orto arrest the contractions if possible. If the patients are feeblwith worn-out constitutions, and the blood has begun to flow, Seccornutum is preferable to Sabina. Crocus is seldom appropriate atthe commencement of the hemorrhage. The cases where the mie^carriage is caused by the premature death of the foetus, may notrequire any medicinal aid previous to the setting in of the hemorrhage, when Secale will most likely prove the most suitable remedIf the above-mentioned remedies do not prevent the miscarriage^and if the os-tinc» dilate more and more, it is advisable not totoo powerful doa©s, and to calmly await the period when the foetuwill be expelled ; for this event can probably only be hastened bmanual interference ; it is moreover very questionable whether atthis period the hemorrhage can be modified by internal treatment. After the expulsion of the foetus most of the above-mentionedhttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
