We doubt whethergrief and care can cause tubercles, but what is absolutely certaithat depression of spirits, sorrow and care, and continued chagriaccelerate the course of tuberculosis, and that a good deal of metal excitement likewise exerts a pernicious influence. Even a chafor a few weeks only from their usual surroundings to a quiet andpleasant retreat, aflects the patients beneficiently. What we have said shows how much importance we attach to acorrectly-understood preventive treatment. Various medicines arelikewise of importance during the course of occult tuberculosis;however, they need not be mentioned in this place, since the indications correspond to the most ordinary precursors of tuberculosinamely chlorosis and scrofulosis, under which respective heads thmedicines and their special indications will be found named. We have now reached the treatment of the fully developed tubercular disease. This treatment, of course, has to be chiefly medicnal, although the above stated dietetic rules should be continuedin all their force. It is diflBicult to furnish full and precisetion in this direction ; in the first place the groups of symptomare too manifold, and in the second place it is next to impossibldraw positive conclusions from clinical cases, for the reason thathe same remedy which helped in one case and eftected a brilliantcure, showed itself perfectly ineffectual in another, apparentlyilar case. We do not intend to supersede the Materia Medica byfurnishing symptomatic groups, and therefore prefer giving merenames, referring to the Materia Medica for the symptomatic detailBronchial catarrhs that break out as an acute disease, and afterwards assume a chronic form, first claim our attention. Their rapcure is of immense importance to the course of the whole disease. As soon as we have ascertained tliat a person attacked with catarhas tubercles, we must in the first place insist upon the patientremaining confined to his room, the temperature of which shouldbe uniformly kept at about 60° F. On the other hand, such patientshould not be all at once confined to their beds. Aconitum whichsuitable in catarrh generally, is still more adapted to tuberculabronchial catarrh commencing with a violent fever which is characterized by great heat without much perspiration. Upon the whole,Tuberculosis. 673however, we prefer BeUoffonna in this form of broncliial catarrhwell as in simple bronchitis; for particular indications we referour remarks in the chapter on acute bronchitis. Belladonna is notonly adapted to cases with high fever, but likewise to cases withmuch fever; no remedy is as effectual in moderating the constantltormenting cough as Belladonna. Bryonia is an excellent remedy,if the patient complains of much lassitude without a great deal ohigh fever; the drawing-stitching pains in one apex of the lungsand the pains in the arm corresponding with this part of the lungor tearing through all the limbs, are likewise complained of; Bryonia is seldom of any use in the subsequent course of the catarrhDigitalis has rendered us excellent service for some years past isimilar cases as those for which Bryonia is indicated ; only if Dhttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
