In the case of a strong adult the pathologicalprocess seldom reaches a height where the respiration is impededto the extent of inducing poisoning of the blood by carbonic acidThis is most characteristically revealed in the persons attackedthe supervention of cerebral symptoms, such as, sopor, coma, deliium ; in the case of adults these symptoms are of rare occurrencein children and old people they are often met with. The capillarybronchitis of the latter is very much like the above-describedinflammatory bronchitis, except that the typhoid character of thepathological process shows itself in the case of old people at amuch earlier period, is much more intense, and the danger is muchgreater. This form of bronchitis at times runs a very rapid course andthen generally terminates fatally, at other times the course is mprotracted. Robust individuals may recover already in the secondweek, very seldom before this time, whereas a duration of onemonth is a very common thing. Sometimes the aftection continuesunchanged for weeks in all its severity, and the patients sink unthe terrible paroxysms of cough rather than from any other cause. It is always a good sign if a quantity of fine, filiform sputa arexpectorated. This is most easily found out by receiving the sputin water, when these fine threads are most easily distinguished.Among old persons in whom this process resembles almost entirelyan attack of pneumonia notha, death sometimes takes plaoe on thethird day, very rarely after the second week. Independently ofthe circumstance that the disease is of itself a dangerous maladythe simultaneously existing pathological disturbances and the possible and ready occurrence of threatening complications are likewise of great importance. Among the latter the pneumonia whichdevelops itself in the neighborhood of the bronchial inflammationmay result so much more disastrously, as the existing bronchitisBronchitis Acuta. 171aloDe determines a most damaging interference with the respiratoract. Acute cedema of the lungs is equally dangerous. Acuteemphysema is of a less threatening character. The most importantcomplication is the presence of tuberculosis. Many assert thatbronchitis is very often the cause of tubercular deposits ; otherthe contrary, are of opinion that bronchitis only excites the suppurative process in tubercular deposits. This is not the place fofurther discussion of this subject. What is certain is that in tuculous individuals capillary bronchitis is very apt . to pass intchronic form with a long-lasting, dry, paroxysmal cough. Relapsesin capillary bronchitis occur much more easily than in any otherform of this disease.d.
