But even though the homoeopathic Materia Medica has only palliatives to offer against the totality odisease, yet we are possessed of many more excellent means towardthe limitation and complete cure of the exacerbations, and for thstoppage of the further progress of incipient alterations of tissand in this way we are able to aflford a relief that may be calleextraordinary if compared with what is accomplished by othermethods of cure. Hence we earnestly advise every physician whotreats chronic bronchitis, to keep these two last-mentioned pointsteadily in view, and never to lose sight of them in the effort teffect a radical cure. With a view of affording a general view of the treatment, wewill first describe the chief remedies in a few short paragraphs.Tartarus stibiatus has already been mentioned when we treated of214 Diseases of the Lungs.acute affections of the mucous membranes, but is perhaps of greatimportance in chronic bronchial catarrh to which it is so characteristically adapted. In bronchitis with a violent, spasmodic couloud rales in the chest, a copious, white expectoration, dyspnoeaoccasioned by the quantity of the secreted mucus, Tart. stib. issovereign remedy; it speedily diminishes the quantity of mucusand thus affords much relief to the sufferer. Very seldom, however, a favorable effect will be witnessed in cases where emphysehas already set in ; for this reason the remedy is better adaptedchronic catarrhs of recent origin, that had taken the place of thacute disease, than to inveterate cases.Pulsatilla is much more useful in chronic than in acute bronchitiif the following symptoms prevail: Cough, prin'cipally at night, excited by tickling in the trachea, with copious expectoration ofmucus ; the mucus is mostly white, but frequently mingled withyellowish or greenish lumps that impart to it au oily, offensivetaste. There must not be any emphysema, w^hereas the presenceof tubercles as cause of the disease points to Pulsatilla. Pulsatis next to indispensable in the bronchial catarrh of chlorotic pawhich almost always, although not in every case, depends upontuberculosis. If, in the case of children, an acute catarrh graduchanges to the chronic form, Pulsatilla is a remedy of the firstimportance.Sulphur is undoubtedly the most important remedy in this diseasebecause it corresponds to the worst and most inveterate cases. Ifemphysema is present, this remedy may never yield any markedresults ; even its palliative effect is questionable. Brilliant rmay, however, be obtained, in cases of chronic catarrh of long sting, if the mucus is secreted in large quantities, or is very tenand the symptoms point to a decided thickening of the mucousmembrane. An eminent indication for Sulphur is the excessivesensitiveness of the skin, so that every trifling change of temperature causes an exacerbation and that, even if the patient remains in his room, he is still powerfully affected by changes inweather. Only this hypersesthesia must not be caused by pulmonary tuberculosis, the tubercles at least must not be in a stathttp://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
