Later in the disease, it was in some casesfurious, the patient struggling desperately to get out of bed, bugenerally it was of the mild, incoherent typhoid type. In an olddrunkard it was precisely the delirium of mania a potu. Stupor, even to profound coma, often marked the last stages.608 Epidemic and Endemic Infectious Diseases.^^Skin. The temperature of the skin after the febrile paroxysmwas commonly natural. In a few cases there was the calor mordaxof typhus,"The perspirations were very irregular, often partial, sometimesoffensive, and never, that I could discern, of the least prognt)8value. The yellowness came on generally by the third or fourthday, seldom earlier, sometimes not until convalescence was established. Petechifie were sometimes observed in protracted cases. The eruption was sometimes vesicular, sometimes like what is knowas prickly heat, sometimes like nettle-rash, and again the skinpresented the lobster-like redness of scarlatina."I^roynoHis. Aitken arranges the data to judge from, intosymptoms which are favorable, and those which are not so. Favorable symptoms: "A slow pulse and moderate temperature of thebody, and quiet stomach. Streaks of blood during the stage ofblack vomit, or after acid elimination has set in, are favorable, the corpuscles are found entire. If the urinary secretion continuand the black vomit be scanty from the first, or is afterwards supressed, the patient may yet survive. Urine simply albuminous isa less serious sign than when it also contains tube-casts. Free, copious urine, no matter how dark or bilious, is the most favorabof any sign. Prognostics may be derived from the effects of treatment." Under homoeopathic treatment the prognosis is infinitelymore favorable than under the Old School treatment with theirmurderous doses of Calomel and Quinine.Dr. Holcombe treated one hundred and forty cases of yellow feverbetween the 13th of August and the 15th of December, 1858. Noneof them were cases of ephemeral sickness, nothing but unequivocalstrongly marked yellow fever was admitted into the list. Of thisnumber seventy-one were white, and sixty-nine colored ; of thecolored thirty-nine were blacks, and thirty mulattoes. The adultswere ninety-three ; children forty-seven ; cases in town one hundand eleven ; cases in the country twenty^-nine. Males sixty, femaeighty. At least one-half of the cases were very severe, the patibeing for several days in a critical and dangerous situation. Ofone hundred and forty cases, nine died. Of these six were treatedhomoeopathically from the beginning, one case was complicated witabortion and profuse hemorrhage ; another, a cachectic negro, diesix weeks alter the day of attack in a typhoid condition, the seqof the fever. Three came into the doctor's hands on the fourth anfifth day of the fever, two of them having employed allopathicmeasures.Febris Icterodes. 609http://www.archive.org/stream/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog/sciencetherapeu00kafkgoog_djvu.txt
