In such a case we give Ipecac. 8; if no improvement hastaken place in a few hours, we prescribe Arsenicum 8, or LachesisWe have seen very fine effects from these remedies. If coarse ralare heard over the whole chest ; if the characteristic sputa arecopious; if soon after the expulsion of the sputa rales are againheard with equal force and distinctness ; if cyanotic phenomena abecoming manifest, and a high degree of dyspnoea and suffocativeanguish torment the patient, we give Tariarus emeL 8, or Veratrur3 every quarter of an hour. The result of these agents is of courvery doubtful, on account of the air having already been in a gremeasure expelled from the cells owing to the vast extent of theoedema. If the strength begins to fail ; if the cough grows lessthe expectoration is more difficult, we again try Phosphorus whicwe now use as a restorative. Very frequently Phosphorus inducesan increased desire to cough, with more copious expectoration andmomentary relief; soon after all the former symptoms set in withmore threatening intensity, and the patients are in danger of beisuffocated by the mucus. This is the moment when an emetic mayproduce a marvelously favorable effect. Let not the use of anemetic bo delayed until the strength is entirely exhausted and thpatients have sunk into a state of sopor. As long as a certaindegree of reactive power remains, we need not hesitate to giveIpecacuanha at the rate of five grains per dose, or Emetin^ halfgrain per dose, every five minutes, until mucus is vomited up incopious quantities, after which many patients begin to improve. As soon as we notice the first signs of drowsiness, we giveAmmonium carbonicum 1 to 8 ; this remedy may prevent poisoningof the blood by carbonic acid.Asthma. 811A collateral congestion setting in during the course of pneumoniascarlatina, pleuritis, carditis, etc., may become associated, besabove-mentioned febrile and catarrhal pneumonia, with such aviolent determination of blood to the brain, that cerebral apoplemay be apprehended. In such a case we employ Belladonna orGlonoine^ [also Verafrum viride in large doses, no less than fiveof the tincture every half hour, IL], together with applicationsice to the head ; if these remedies have no sort of eftect, we dohesitate, as a last desperate resort, to bleed the patient. [We dnot believe that under the use of Aconite, Belladonna and Veratruviride, in appropriate doses, the necessity for bleeding will eveoccur. H.]If there is insufficiency or stenosis of the mitral valve, we givPulsatilla or Kali carb. If oedema of the extremities, genital oretc., is present, we resort to Arsenicum^ Lucliesis^ IXgitalis. Fserous eifusions in the pleura or peritoneum we give according tothe prevailing symptoms Arsenicum^ HelleboruSy China^ Scilla, Sidphuvy [also Apocynum cannabinum^ H.], but without much hope ofsuccess.
